93 1.4 Front anti-roll bar bushes - CH
Anyone out there know if it's possible to replace the end bushes on the front anti-roll bar without taking the whole thing off the car (as suggested by Mr Haynes!)? The bushes look as if they're 'driven' on to the bar at each end and, with 140,000 miles on the clock I would think they're not gonna come off without a fight! Any advice would be very welcome. (The engine is a C14SE, if it's relevant).

Thanks for that, Victorbox, but the arrangement desribed there doesn't seem to be the same as mine! My bush housings seem to be driven directly on to the ARB at each end (with domed chunks of rubber and domed steel washers attaching to the lower wishbone(s). the problem as I see it is gonna be trying to get the thing off the ARB (and I really do not want to try and take the entire ARB off the car, as Mr Haynes suggests!!). Grateful for the link though - thank you.

sorry about that posted it twice but all i could get was those stars, i cut them off with an angle grinder then clean the end of the arb removing all the paint and getting it as clean as i can and as smooth as i can then with a liberal coating of rubberlube/grease wind them on by hand But you need to do it in one go keep it moving all the time untill its in the right position (nigh on immpossible to move once you let it rest) i have never had to remove the arb to fit these and have done loads cleanleness is the key to this job on the end of the arb clean and smooth, Regards TB

Many thanks for that, topbloke. Much appreciated. Gonna give it a shot tomorrow, weather permitting(!). Starngely, the car passed its MoT the other day, but I'm certain the knocking I'm getting when going over bumps is due to these bushes. (I would have thought this would have been an MoT issue?). Thanks again.

they are but this is the first time that you have mentioned a noise its unlikely to be the pendulems more likely the d bushes the pedulems only ever snap/break they dont knock !Regards TB

Damn - and I've just bought one for each side! They're certainly not broken (I had 'em disconnected at the bottoms a few months ago to replace the lower wishbones), but I'd somehow convinced myself that worn bushes were the culprit. Where exactly are these 'D' bushes located? Mr Haynes doesn't even acknowledge they exist(!)

The bush which often fails is the rear bush on the wishbone. You can fit new bushes, but, you might also find reasonably priced complete replacement wishbones.

But, if you've fitted new wishbones, then, as TB, it may be worth checking the bushes between the anti-roll bar and the subframe.

follow the arb around onto the subframe its bolted down to the subframe check the links one may have broken a good trick to see if the d bush is worn and causeig your noise is to flatten a piece of brake pipe with a hammer and knock it in between the arb and the rubber bush it takes up the slack if the noise go's (on a roadtest) then thats your problem and you need to replace them,Regards TB

Thanks topbloke. Too wet today to take a look - I'll get to it during the week. I assume the ARB'll have to come off to replace the 'D' bushes, if that what it turns out to be??

no remove one bolt slack of the other and the retainer will roll round slide the bush out remove, put plenty of grease around bush inner and outer and refit, no problem, Regards TB

It was the RH D-bush bracket/holder/retainer wot dunnit (cracked)!! I haven't changed it yet but plan to as soon as the weather permits (I'll replace both rubber bushes at the same time). Very many thanks for the diagnosis - you've saved me wrestling with the 'pendulums' (which clearly wouldn't have cleared the fault!). PS looks as if I'll have to go to Vauxhalls for the retainer - can't find 'em anywhere on ebay etc. Many thanks again for your help, topbloke!
