VFR800 surging tickover - blowpipe
It is with some trepidation I post a bike related plea on this site, but here goes as I'm sure the principles are the same.
Honda VFR800, 2000 model, 18,000 miles suddenly develops tickover of 2,500RPM (should be @1300), surging every now and then to over 3,000. Only modification is a Micron race can, been on for 10 months without a problem. Honda dealer baffled, all normal causes checked, computer registers no fault. Any ideas?

I've only ever owned dodgy old bikes with carbs, but I'll try my best...

Maybe some connectors are damp/wobbly so the pooter gets fed some duff info (but is still within normal operating range so no fault is triggered).

Maybe the pooter itself is faulty, and does not have the capability to diagnose any faults within itself (i.e. it can only check sensor resistance)

Fuel starvation so that it runs lean and revs up a bit?

Sorry I can't help anymore :(

Does this bike have a servo controlled tick over and if so does it hace a "NO throttle" micro switch. These can give exaxtly this problem as the servo is only used when the trottle is completely closed i.e. tick over but if the switch fails or faulters duff contacts the revs serge and the vibration resettles the contacts and it ticks over again.

Answers look a little sparse here.

You could try:

You need uk.rec.motorcycles

or rec.motorcycles.tech.

These are my own opinions, and not necessarily those of all Toads.

Thanks for the ideas. I'll check the other site, and in the meantime hope Honda come up with something. Anyway, it's horrible weather so now's as good a time as any for it to go wrong.

If there's any interest, a VFR site has suggested the problem may lie with the coolant temperature sensor. If the fuel injection doesn't get a reading, it assumes the engine is still cold and adjusts accordingly, hence a fast/surging tickover.
I'll be bold enough to suggest this to the trained mechanics if the Honda 'Helpline' (not much evidence of that at the moment) gives no guidence.
HJ, thanks for the thumbs up for bikes.

Many years ago I had a Honda which developed a sort of "grunt" when accelerated when hot. Diagnosed by specialist Honda technician (not local mechanic) as piston slap. Honda offered to supply 1 piston so long as I allowed stripdown by Honda and paid for all parts. This came to more than bike was worth so I did it myself.
Presented Honda specialist with crank with big end shell welded onto one journal, with comment that it was the worst case of piston slap I had seen.

Latest on this is that the Honda helpline reckon they've the answer (undisclosed to me as yet), so the bike's back in on Monday. The best news is that they'll treat it as a warranty repair, despite the bike being three months outside the period. Top marks to Honda.

Problem traced to a blockage in the water pipe to the thermostat on autochoke, apparently. The first instance of this on a VFR 800 the dealership has dealt with.
