I hired a van at the weekend. They didn't pre-authorise they charged the card and then credit the "deposit" as well as the hire charge to the card. The balance was refunded when I returned the van (I got one day's hire back too because I managed to shift everything in one day).
The extra "deposit" happened to be the excess I'd need to pay if there was damage. Although the amounts being the same could be coincidence but I suspect not.
If I'd hired the Ferrari they had there, the deposit was apparently £5000! And you had to arrange your own insurance!!!!

possible:
1. did you use the forum search button next to log in button?
2. limit search period to 1 month [coz Pug says plenty of "recent" discussion].
3. spelling of "authorisation" as I suggested.
