"Optimium" for the ever increasing electrical demands, plus Citroens combined starter/generator--hybrid drive arrangment on the flywheel housing?

I thought I read somewhere that 48v was going to be the new 12v.

whatever, I hope they get rid of the usless cigar lighter type accessory connector. It just kinda evolved and snuk up on us. Its not Fit For Purpose. In fact its FFFA.

Sounds sensible... less copper required for wiring, so potentially (slightly) lighter cars. Also connections would be less prone to malfunctioning due to dicky/tarnished contacts.

Electrics will be 36v.The 42v. will be the alternator output to supply the power.Means some smaller cables and components-most of car electronics operate at 5v. or less.Cigar lighter socket powers my Garmin most satisfactorily-tho' I believe that also operates at 5v.

What would 36 volt electrics mean for batteries on an ordinary petrol or diesel?

Three times the size or smaller cells?
did I see that car electrics would be 36 volt? - SpamCan61 {P}
Personally I wouldn't expect the battery size to change much unless there's a move from lead acid to a different chemistry; just more, smaller cells. Not sure if there's a downside to smaller cells, maybe we have a battery guru who can enlighten us.

Come over here and tell my wife she can no longer charge two mobiles while the kids are watching a dvd and she's lighting a sly fag out the window when she thinks the kids aren't looking at the same time as I'm listening to the ipod and relying on the sat nav.

I say lets have more of them. One for every seat, I say.

And don't forget one in the boot for the cool box.

I agree. We need smaller. more sensible sockets - the current lighter sockets give poor connections and are incredibly bulky. But we need lots of the replacement sockets around the car. By every seat. On the dash top. In the boot. By the sunvisors. In the engine bay.

or some sort of charge tray (they are just starting to come out).

That way you could dump your mobile phone in a tray or pocket in the car and it charges up with no physical connection.

No sockets to worry about then.

its FFFA.

It powers my electric tyre inflator nicely.

I think the problem some of us have with the cigar lighter socket is that many plugs fall out at the slightest provocation, that's why we'd like something smaller and more robust.

Cars used to have proper two-pin sockets either on the dashboard (eg series Land Rover) or under the bonnet (eg Triumph 2000).
did I see that car electrics would be 36 volt? - Altea Ego
It was not designed for the purpose for which it is now used. We need a proper new standard plug and yes one for every seat.

...Cars used to have proper two-pin sockets either on the dashboard (eg series Land Rover)...

One the Land Rover we had as a breakdown tender the heater - optional no doubt - was plugged into the two-pin socket.

We also used it for the orange beacon.

Either be cold, or be seen....stuff it, it's up to the other drivers to keep their eyes open.

You can search for "42 Volt Power Net" and get lots of information or en.wikipedia.org/wiki/42-volt_electrical_system on wiki
