How would you charge a sat nav unit (garmin) using a 24 volt lorry connection. Can you buy an inverter to drop to 12 volts or can you get a 24 volt charger for devices.
Any help greatly appreciated.

No need to invert because it's still DC. You need to step it down. Some of the charger cable supplied might already do this.
You don't say which Garmin, but a quick look on Halfords via a Google search:

Garmi Nuvi 310T, I'm reserved that item for tomorrow pickup
Thanks RTJ70 I assumed all car chargers were 12v.

Ebay item: 200402604806
is an example of what I would use for this task.

Assuming anything is needed at all. Some satnav cigar lighter leads handle 12v and 24v already. Time for the OP to tell us which model he has.

The vast majority of sat navs and decent branded phone chargers work with either 12v or 24v input. If you have a look on the device there should be a sticker or stamp telling you what is suitable as the input voltage that the device will handle. If it is a charger then it normally gives you the input voltage and the output voltage.
99.9% sure that your new Garmin will work perfectly okay with a 24v supply.

Don't know about Garmin, but my TomTom ONE works with both 12v and 24v. My Sony Ericsson and Nokia phone chargers and my mp3 FM transmitter all work with both 12v and 24v too.
The only lighter socket-powered device I've ever had that didn't like 24v was a small fridge (6x330ml can size) bought from a market stall for £20 about 4 years ago. It got rather warm.

As has been said, most chargers will now work on either 12 or 24v. Also, many newer trucks are 12v lighter/accessory sockets, even older ones generally have one that is 12v and another that is 24v.
Has been quite a few years since I last saw a wagon that had only a 24v supply, I think my old Volvo FL10 was the last I drove that had just 24v and that was on a "P" plate!!!

The smaller ones only tend to have one lighter socket - I burned out my 12v fridge plugging it into the 24v supply in an 06 plate 7.5t Cargo! Also all the 7.5tonners I have had regular contact with, up to 54 plate, have had only the 1 socket at 24v and nothing else.

Thanks for all replies. I didn't buy one as I found that the original car charger was dual voltage.
