96 1.8 Abs light turns ON, while car is not moving - nagib
Hej!
I have problem on Xantia 1,8 16v, 1996.
Abs light goes regulary off when you start car, and after about 2 minutes, it turnes on, even if you dont move the car!
Have you any idea what it can be? If it is sensors (not good resistance), then it would not pass the test, and turn lamp off. If it is something other with sensors (do not work, or signal uregular/not high enough), why it turn lamp on when car is not moving?

Thanks

At a rough guess a faulty sensor or poor connection, usually in the wheel arches - some time spent with a multimeter on the ABS ECU plug could show up which sensor is at fault. However to be sure a session with a Lexia is the best bet. It's not as straightforward as you think, just because it initially turns off the light doesn't mean a sensor isn't faulty - you're not dealing with a digital on or off system.

I would agree. Try disconnecting each sensor at the two pin plug on the end of the sensor lead and measure the resistance across the sensor, should be somewhere in the region of 1000 ohms, if they read OK the problem is likely with the plug and socket itself, scrape the pins clean and reassemble with a little grease.

Try this:-
The ABS ECU is located between the engine bay fuse box and LHM reservoir. It's attached to the side of the ABS hydraulic block.

Easiest way to check the sensors is to measure them at the ABS ECU plug after removing it from the ECU (ignition off before removing it).

Then using a good digital meter, measure each sensor at the ECU plug as follows:

LH front: Pins 1 and 2
LH rear: Pins 5 and 6
RH rear: Pins 22 and 23
RH front: Pins 19 and 20

The pin numbers will be seen if you look carefully at the plug base.

Each sensor is connected into the main loom via a two pin plug about a metre away from the sensor itself. It is worth checking these connectors before writing off a sensor completely.

I measured a new sensor at 1050 Ohm resistance.
The other things to check are the reluctor rings on the hubs for dirt or breaks and that both abs fuses are intact.

Thanks to all!
I hope that tomorow will have time to check all this.
Does someone have eletric diagram of Teves mk4, if I write OK name of ABS ECU on xantia '96. I will be glad to check other things, if it is not what you said - sensors and rings and conectors.
Sorry for bad englisch...

I have tried, and it seems that this scheme some of you give here >
LH front: Pins 1 and 2
LH rear: Pins 5 and 6
RH rear: Pins 22 and 23
RH front: Pins 19 and 20

is not good for my Xantia.

I have tried with ommeter all combinations, and have found 1060 ohm on next combinations>
1,6
15,30
29,31

and I still cant find one. That is probbably bad one sensor. But I dont know which. I have tried front, and check on sensors directly, and they are good, but I cant find connector for back sensor.
Does some of you have another schema, I think theves mk4, that have sensors on pins 1,6< 15,30< 29,31< ?,??

Thanks,
Nagib

The rear connectors are difficult to access. I think they are under the back seat somewhere. Can I suggest that you post your problem on
www.frenchcarforum.co.uk ? ABS problems appear quite regularly and you will find detailed diagrams, location of connectors etc and many hints and tips and photographs of easy ways to check, access and change the sensors.

The pair of wires missing are pins 28 and 19 (at the ecu connector)left rear sensor. If there is no resistance across this pair then the sensor or wiring is at fault.hth

I have found missing pins, and defekt sensor.

Now, i have to get and change it.
thanks

Sensor changed and ABS working!
Thanks to all!

I had ABS light on intermittently with car moving or stationary. I checked the resistance on all four sensors. Three were similar but one from front left kept giving different bizarre readings. Ordered new front sensor. When replacing it found brake pads were worn right down on this wheel. On removing problematic sensor found the face o the sensor has three metal plates the central one being magnetic. The face was covered in what looked like iron filings (presumably from the badly worn brake discs). On cleaning off all the metallic muck the sensor then gave consistent correct resistance readings so I think the problem was the iron muck build up on the sensor face. As I had a new sensor I fitted that just to be on the safe side and new disk pads. Now ABS is Ok. Lesson, just try cleaning the sensor face first if it is mucky.
