Depending on the stereo you will need one of two special tools.
If your stereo has a small hole in each corner of the front of the stereo you need special 'keys' to insert in to the holes. I have very successfully used a wire coat hanger in the past - just snip the coat hanger at the corners where a shirt shoulder would be. You end up with two 'V' shaped bits of hanger, which you can use to insert into the holes.

Here are some 'proper' ones: tinyurl.com/ydx7vt3

If you have no holes, you usually need to insert special keys (manufacturer specific) into the gaps between the short side of the stereo and the surrounding dash. Like these: tinyurl.com/yzgnpv2

I have also in the past shoved some thin bits of metal down the side and 'waggled' the radio out.

Please note, that you should disconnected battery.

Thanks for the info,I tried what you said but couldnt suss it out,so took it to VW dealer who removed it for free. Now its out,I want to put a new one in,but the new ones are all 11 inches wide, the space I have is only around 7 inches wide. The manufacturers of the replacement stereo insist it will fit this car,but how can it? unless I start removing a lot of the fascia??
