Desperate dealer servicing deal - or more lies? - Bill Payer
So after the supplying dealer tried to steal £50 off my daughter by attempting to charge her £200 for the first year service after twice quoting £150, and even then not completing all of the minimal amount of work required, we took our business for the next (more major) service elsewhere and were very happy with the new dealership.

The original dealer called yesterday and said the car was overdue for service and they could do it for £79. I asked if this would be according to Mitsubishi schedule and if they would stamp the book and they said yes on both counts.

Remarkable. I wanted to get into an argument on so many levels but was rendered speechless.

My son had 2 L200 pickups. Both were serviced according to the book- at great expense. After the 2nd head gasket failure, ( one on each truck) he sold it and bought a Ford Ranger instead- he will never go back to Mitsubushi.

Mitsubishi aren't having a good time it seems, they don't understand how to market their own products. Not surprised to hear of desperate dealers, their sales are well down when the Colt should be prime scrappage material.

The Colt Car Company, which was the main importer of Mitsi's since the 70's is now wholly owned by Mitsubishi as of last year, so *you should* start seeing some changes?

Nothing but praise for them so far!!

Misubishi - isn't this the same company that was castigated in Japan a couple of years ago for falsifying reports on warranty defects?

Since that event I wouldn't touch their products.

I've actually owned 3 Mitsubishi vehicles - a Colt 1.3 - A Sapporo and an L300 van.
I was in the motor trade (ere he goes again!) for 14 years at the 'hands on' greasy fingernails level.
I can thoroughly recommend their products - to anyone!

We were happy with both our old style Colt and Carisma - both had minimal repairs and were very reliable. I agree though that Mitsubishi have fallen behind rivals and haven't managed to get their product out there. They should be picking up the customers that have now bought Kia's and Hyundai's, but instead seem to have lost their place in the market.

£79 for an annual service, including parts and labour? I don't think so!

That's probably the cheapest quote for a main dealer service I've ever heard! (ie. NOT a 'value' service, but one of the 'logged' ones)

I bought a new petrol Grandis(2.4 Auto) last year and bought the 'first 3 services' deal for £250. For this car it will be 3 years.

My pal has a Mitsubishi and raves about the service he gets; my first one seemed to be completed fully.

Hence I was rendered speechless.

According to the service schedule, Colt needs its pollen filter changing every 12mths. As that's about £30 on its own, there's no way they could properly do even the basic schedule service for £79.

Also, the dealer will know full well (but let's be charitable and say they're too stupid to realise) that if our car had missed its last service then it needs a major one. With Mitsubishi, the major service unusually includes such things as rear brake strip and clean, and brake fluid change.

I was quite pleased to get all that done for £220 elsewhere, and that dealer did the body check without question, whereas the first dealer refused unless I paid extra, although they'd read it out to me as part of their quote.

I have been offered a 3 year servicing package on my new Ford, for £440, which also includes the 2nd and 3rd years of a Europe wide total breakdown service; year 1 is free with the car. As I am presently paying £85 a year for my Europe breakdown this looks like a good deal overall and the price looks realistic to me

I have been reading with interest all the threads on the Colt. Some highly recommend the 1.1 3 cylinder engine. Get the 1.3 Cleartec, i have it and it is truly a fantastic little car.£30 car tax for a year, more mpg and it has stop/start which you can disable. I have had many long runs, including from Yorkshire to Portsmouth. It's quiet and i got out the other end feeling fine, no aches and pains. Interior space is simply brilliant but boot space, oh dear, but i knew that when buying the car, ok, i have to lower the back seat, so what, i do alot of shooting and carry alot of gear, with the backs seats folded its cavernous. As for the cost of parts, come on, its Japanese so you'll not need too many. should you require brakes etc check out Euro car parts thus avoiding main agents.

Get a Colt, simply put you cannot go wrong. The cleartec has cruise, air con and all the decent stuff.

I'm getting interested in buying a used Colt 1.5 diesel. I'm attracted to the very spacious nature of the car and to the fact that used diesel models are in greater supply than the petrol ones.

The diesel engine was, apparently, sourced from Mercedes. Are they susceptible to the known common rail faults? Is there anything particular I should look out for when buying?

The 1.1 engine is far far better than the 1.3

The 1.3 feels slow, compared to the 1.1 it feels as if you've put 10 slabs in the back. The sound is very strange and according to the write up has reliability problems.

The 1.1 is a real delight, sounds great, has lots of punch if you rev over 3 /12k, does fantastic MPG if kept below this.

I too was lost for words when I rang to book SWMBO's Fiat 500 in for its second annual service. 14,000 miles. I wasn't expecting anything remotely low priced but when they came back with £550 I asked them to check and they confirmed it - 4 hours labour and it includes a brake fluid change, when would like to book it in? I said I'd think about it and the chap said when you ring back make sure you ask for me. That's two basic sales techniques played on me. Rang another main dealer 120 miles away where I could take it whilst doing a days work. £275 and includes brake fluid and spark plugs. Rang back local dealer, shock, consternation, we may have quoted you for the wrong service, yes it appears we have that will be £278. I mentioned the brakes were a bit squeaky and they said it could be discs and pads, I said both worn out? Oh yes sir, easily possible with that mileage. Wonder if I'll be getting a brakes related phone call sometime during the day of the service? An independent wanted £250 for the service so its only £28 for the stamp but someone's been teaching the service guys how to price and close business. I wonder how many people gulp and swallow the first price. It would only take one a day to put another £100k into the coffers.
