01 HDi Buying a spare key.... - legacylad
Mods...not sure if this should be in 'Technical'. Please move if necessary. Thankyou

A friend of mine has recently purchased a '51 406 Hdi90 estate. It came with only one key, and the remote does not work. The local Peugeot dealer quoted a large amount of money for a spare key, with working remote. My friend does not have access to t'internet, nor has anything to do with computers, so I am trying to help him out. Any suggestions please.

{yep, probably more suited to Tech Matters - moved}

Depends whether it's multiplexed or not, I'd think it is on an '01 but... I presume he tried the reset procedure in the manual, if the plip is goosed then his only real choice would be a wallet-emptying session at Peugeot. I think the guts for my plip were about 60 quid, plus a session on the computer to make it work.

Hi,

Depending on type of software and programming involved you may have to get a 'proper' spare key made up. I only got one key with my focus and Ford wanted £200 for the new key and programming it. However I managed to find a local auto key cutting place that gave a genuine spare key including programming for £75. It pays to shop around and avoid the main dealer if possible.

Thanks for your replies.
I called in at a Timpsons yesterday and they confirmed it is a main dealer part.
Looks like my friend will have to dig deep if he wants a working remote....

I think you would be better contacting a proper locksmith rather than Timpsons. Have a look in the yellow pages. If not a good indy garage maybe a better bet price wise.

Steve.

After having a new gearbox on my '53 406 2.0HDi (multiplex) the remote ceased to work. A change of remote battery had no effect, so the Peugeot dealer offered to rejig the car's electronics to make it recognise the remote again, for only £70-odd.

I locked it by putting the key in the door after that.
