I am trying to check the accuracy of my odometer which I think is reading fast.
How accurately are the phones on a motorway spaced?
What other method could I use to check the mileage reading?

The phones on the motorway are located at 1 mile apart and should be pretty accurate. Another way you could test your mileage is with a satnav. My Garmin records the mileage of a journey and max speed etc. A sat nav should be accurate.
Check that your tyre pressures are correct. Have you had new tyres fitted recently. I have heard that different makes can cause problems, something to do with the rolling resistance but not sure how true that is.

not accurate enough for checking an odometer or speedo. Buy or borrow a sat nav.

I thought that Sat Navs were only accurate if they were tested over flat ground, (ie no hills). Or have I been mis-led???

you have. hills and the change of height and the way the mapping is calculated are insuffcient to cause any error in sat nav. There may be some error on very winding road or sharp curves.
Sat nav is the most accurate way to check your speedo and odo. Your speedo will be between 5mph and 10mph fast at 70mph, your odo will be very accurate.

Many modern road motorway markers are now in km not miles but the error would be obvious. They can be quite difficult to count over a 10km run so a sat nav would be the answer. Regards Peter

Do the exact same journey in a couple of other cars and compare the readings with your car.
