Excellent news that action has been taken. Hopefully the insurers will also be looking to prosecute the owners of the vehicles he crashed. Would also be nice to see third parties involved counter sue the claimant- as I wonder if Patel was actually insured to drive the cars he crashed at the time of the accident.
A friend of mine was recently involved in a similar crash- going downhill, car in front suddenly slowed dramatically but no brake lights. By the time she realised the car was coming to a stop was too late to react. Passanger got out clutching their neck with both hands claiming whiplash which rang alarm bells for her.
Is a truly hateful crime, and the office workers who exposed it deserve a medal.

Lately I've been wondering if it might be worth getting a camera and black box recorder fitted. You know the ones that detect an impact and record the thirty seconds leading up to it. The discreet camera is located somewhere near the rear-view mirror.

Totally agree with the above post. A great deal of this happens locally to me in Bradford- even to the point that the car in front of you will reverse into you, and the occupants of the car behind swear that you drove into the back of the car in front.

What I can't understand is why it took so long for the police to cotton on to this. If the car has no brake lights and then a passenger leaps out feigning injury then one of the first things I'd have done is call the police.
Unless they were called and it's the usual case of police incompetence.
|
Sadly in my friends case she had no idea about insurance scams, or that people did things like this. Was only after she emailed me some time after the accident, and mentioned the details in passing that alarm bells rang.
Got back to her to warn her, and sadly whilst discussing the details we have both come to the conclusion it looked suspicious.
Still waiting to hear back from her to find out the latest.

Staged 93 crashes...how on earth did his name not flash all the lights at insurance claims depts before it got to this stage.
I hope the insurance companies take the co conspirator's to the cleaners over this, i'm fed up to the back teeth with paying for low life's scams in my premium's.

...Unless they were called and it's the usual case of police incompetence...
Probably more a case of car crime being a low priority.
The cop-out position for the cop is to say the victim is insured, so will be looked after.
It would be a risky strategy, but one option would be to fill in one of these people at the roadside.
That would guarantee some police involvement.

i also assume he drove other peoples cars and pretended he was they

Wondered why it didn't flag up with the insurers- so reread it, the driver was not the claimant- seems he caused crashes in other peoples cars then the owner claimed- hence my earlier comment about him possibly not being insured as was not his own vehicle, and wouldn't be putting the claim in.
Was only identified by alert office staff, and passers by taking photos of him on different occasions which the police then ran through face recognition software to link the accidents together.
|
To me, this calls into question the common supposition that goes like this:
BiB: "Mr Driver, you claim that the vehicle pulled abruptly into your path, then braked so hard that your car impacted its rear. However, no independent witnesses exist to support your assertion, so we will assume that you are at fault. Please accept this fine and points with our compliments."
If it hadn't been for that, then there's no way this chap could have perpetrated the crime, could he?

He probably chose his victims carefully - girls with stupid gonks and cuddly toys laid out all over the parcel shelf.
Doubt he would have tried it on with our PDA in the cab of her artic.

I think I know this roundabout - it's a few minutes walk from my old man - I'm guessing it's where you turn off for John Lewis and Sainsbury's just before you get on Kingsway.
|
Surely BBD you can't be implying that our fragrant trucker pat might have kept her foot in it a bit too long and turned the cat into the strawberry jam he so deserves to be?
'I panicked officer.'
'There there missus. Nothing to worry about. Just claim it on your insurance.'
|
"and turned the cat into the strawberry jam he so deserves to be?"
wishing will make it so...

I think it's the rdbt before the John Lewis turn, BBD. Basically a T junction, we use this road a lot. Heading north, you can generally go right through at some speed as you hardly ever see a car coming from your right, where Bovis is. Maybe a good spot for our felon's activities as regular users will know there's only a small chance of the car in front stopping at the line. Apart from the witnessing office heroes, a well thought out spot by chummy.
SWMBO uses thisc road more than me now on her regular expeditions to M&S...a perfect client for Patel.
Nice to hear he's enjoying a good bit of ' bird '.

Are you talking about the t-junction with The Griffin that used to be a pound a pint...?
|
Ah, the Griffin....happy memories. I think it's all done up now and the beers gone up to matck.Nearly bought a house opposite in 1969 but got gazumped.....glad now.
RDBt is on the Handforth by-pass, the new A34, first one you come to going south from Kingsway.

Ahh I get you, that bypass is all new to me (Been away a few years) - although I did use that road to get to Alderley Edge to have illicit sex with an old flame not so long ago.
Shhhh.

Here it is....

Too pro for that Ted!

By your map, Ted, the Handforth Bypass goes under Etchells Road which becomes Turves Road. Right on Highfield, left on Park Ave, right on Wyngate and that's my old man. You can see the shadow of that huge tree falling across the tennis courts - he won't have it cut. good for him. It's visible from space.

Nice bit of pergola thing going on at the back of the garage there. :)

According to the report in the paper this morning, this bloke worked for an accident management company.
And managing accidents was exactly what he was doing.
I'm now hoping to see custodial sentences for some of the people he conspired with to defraud the insurance companies.
|
Well, how can I put this - apparently these 'sort' of people have a little sign for their 'brothers' so that they don't crash into the back of them.
If you are behind a car with maybe a piece of ribbon tied to the bumper or back, then that is a signal not to get too close as the car may be stopping very quickly with no brake lights (of course the bulbs are already blown).
The 'signal' on the rear of the car may be something else, obviously circulated around the 'community' beforehand.
This is going on all the time. Also, what happens is that when an 'accident' occurs, out of knowhere, appears several of their friends who are 'witnesses' to the 'accident'. That is why straightaway a mobile phone camera or the like should take pictures immediately the accident occurs, otherwise the 'witnesses' will say they were all in the car.
|
"Well, how can I put this - apparently these 'sort' of people have a little sign for their 'brothers' so that they don't crash into the back of them."
Internet myth.
|
who ever these people are, they are all one kind of "Category" - Mindless Rubbish of socitety (i wont type what i really want to put, its a bit stronger and i dont want to get into trouble)
You cant mess with peoples lives like this just to gain a quick buck - some people will get traumautised by it, no matter how little the bump - the cars that are owned by the victims they work hard for and in most cases will be their pride and joy
Also there was a picture in the paper today of the merc that was used to stage a crash, what a waste of car it makes me sick it really does that this sort of thing happens. im glad he has got arrested i only wish it was sooner. to save the upset of most of the 94 people.

I now carry a small Flip Ultra 8 gig video camera ( £100 on Amazon) everywhere on my belt and would recommend it for just this sort of situation.
It does wonders for your peace of mind in those situations, particularly when driving in somewhere like Doha where I was last week.
You are statistically 30 times more likely to have an accident there than in UK......
|
...Internet myth...
A myth? On the internet?
Surely not.

Optimist stated:

Now we know how you got your name ;-]

I once watched a program, I think on BBC1, about insurance investigators . They featured an guy who claimed he was involved in an accident. The insurance investigators proved that the accident could not have happened as he said and returned his car unrepaired to him.
Nothing happened to him
I suggest the insurance companies are not really bothered about the smaller accidents as they are able to pass the costs on
Its like lost luggage by the airlines. No big business is sufficiently effected so it is not take seriously

Manchester Evening News tonight carried more reports about this scum.
Police are investigating many more people from insurers/garages etc. Arrests have been made.
I'll try and keep you informed....could snowball massively.

He only gets a three and a half year ban from driving!
Seems to me this would be a prime example of a case for a life ban.
Very toerag, really taking it. Make sure if he's ever caught driving again it's porridge. Might make him go away don't you think?

Lud is Nick Griffin, and i claim my five pounds.
|
That would be a smear on the great institution of LOBBY Ludd...
Good grief though, are we now to be careful using the phrase "go away" in case it could be twisted into some accusation of discrimination?
Surely most people would like miscreants, of whatever lineage, to 'go away' - perhaps to some island in the middle of the Pacific.
Sheesh, perhaps the remainder would care to volunteer to instead have a miscreant come and live in their house, thus saving the taxpayer the cost of keeping them in a prison?
|
I'm sure Lud wasn't meaning 'forced repatriation' but as it was topical to Question Time...!

Too expensive - there's one in the Atlantic we can use.
Just don't let them near the Guiness tho ;-)

Diamond - well done for your subtle message. In Bolton, Lancashire, this has been rife for years and has featured in local press, tv etc. The buses now have cameras fitted behind the windscreen as they were prime targets for the scammers who would pull the most outrageous stunts to get hit from behind.
If a car reverses into another, one should be able to tell, as the reversing light bulbs would have their filaments burnt out.
So no there is no myth about this. Because it's true.

Update...you heard it here !
18 people have admitted conspiracy to defraud at the Manchester Crown Court.
12 have been imprisoned for periods of up to 9 months. A further six were given non- custodial punishments.
I wonder what scam these people will think up while they are taking a break with HM.
I'm sure there are some more trials in the pipeline, I'll keep you informed.
