Three-wheeled scooters - pyruse
I've noticed quite a few scooters with two front wheels recently.
Obviously these are lot more complex because the whole thing still tilts.
I assume they are more expensive.
So what is the advantage of having two front wheels on a scooter?
Not having to put your foot on the ground?

I saw one of these tested on a TV programme a year or 2 ago - can't remember now which one it was, but they quite liked it IIRC. I think the main advantage was stability, and the main disadvantage was the image ie. the 'real men don't ride trikes' sort of thing.

Must have been 5th Gear:

Quite a few other tests on youtube as well.

Not quite so good for threading through traffic, F-T, and of course the scoot's exempt from congestion charges; cheaper to buy and tax as well.

I have to admit that fuel economy is becoming less of a reason to go on to two wheels these days; my i10 returns pretty much the same mpg as my 1200 Sportster.

No prizes for guessing which is more fun though!

I'm sorry, I cannot share your enthusiasm for that particular motor bicycle. However, I would certainly like there to be concessions and encouragement for ownership of motorbikes - after all, if the Gov't are keen to provide money for the "scrappage scheme" for cars, which seems to amount to a generous figure, then why not? What could these be? Free "tax", of course - free something else, too? Clothing? I am probably being unimaginitive again. How about a straight £1000 grant to buy a new machine?

More chance of knitting fog mate. I'd settle for the concession of a new Chief Constable in North Wales!

Only up to a point, apparently:

"But as the eccentricity of the gyroscope was only sufficient for a smooth curve in the direction of spin of the gyroscope, no rounding of sharp curves was possible to the left. This was the only, but very objectionable, defect, and it prevented the development of the system; no remedy was found at that time to enable the car to negotiate sharp curves, either to left or to right with equal ease."

Looks great though, and I'd love to see people getting on and off without it tilting.

An interesting "take" on the Govt's "green credentials". I agree.

As an afterthought, would you need a bike or a car licence to pilot this 2 1/2 ton monster ?
I rather lean towards a bike licence. but I don't know if bikes have to come under a certain weight.

I remember reading about this beast in the Meccano Magazine (mentioned in the link) as a youngster. I couldn't get my head around the idea of a gyroscope - still can't, for that matter!

What?? I didn't mention any "2 1/2 ton monster", just referred to grants for motorcyclists.

Probably, but I would anyway in case anyone recognised me.......

Depends which one. Some of these scoots are actually classed as tricycles, something to do with the gap between the front wheels. Friend of mine has just bought a Piaggio version, one of the bigger ones with a 400cc engine I think, and he tells me that helmets are not compulsory on them.

I'd wear one for the same reasons as Humph! ;-)

There's a test on one of these in this month's Ride.

Forget 3 wheeled motorcycles, how about a single wheeled one - a motor unicycle:.....

Yes, you are. It's a motorcycle. Were it a trike, then no. Were it a motorcycle and sidecar combination, then yes, if sitting on the motorcycle, or no if sitting in the side-car.

From Kevin Ash's test of the Piaggio 3 wheeler hybrid in the Telegraph*

"... the LT, is the only practical solution for many road users: it can be ridden legally with a car licence.

By widening the front track slightly Piaggio has qualified the MP3 LT as a trike, meaning a car driver can ride it, and there isn't a requirement to wear a helmet. "

From this, and Piaggio's website, the implication is that the 'standard' 3wheeler scoots are classed as bikes, not trikes...

Improved stability and braking are claimed advantages (I can understand that on greasy urban streets!)

What about getting a bike licence and a normal scooter/ bike?

It worries me that there will be drivers moving straight to a quite powerful machine without having had any training at all. Some of riding I see from riders of 50cc scooters is frightening!

The other one is 420mm, & is a motorbike.

I'd like to see the reaction when driving (helmet-less) a MP3 LT past a policeman.

I've been abroad.

Saw a three wheeler, with two back wheels. It looked like a standard Peugeot 50cc jobby, but with what appeared to be a diff in the middle of the back axle.

We had a local case where a rider of one of those enclosed BMWs argued he didn't need a helmet. He won it. Would it have set a precedent?
