1.8 TSI - feedback? - FP
I am interested in hearing some feedback on this car, specifically on these areas:

Performance - the torque figures suggest a bit of oomph from quite low revs; as I'm used to the grunt of a 2-litre turbodiesel, would I be very disappointed?

Economy - "real world" figures, please.

Handling - directional stability, cornering, motorway comfort.

Anything else of note.

As always, my grateful thanks to anyone who can respond.

We have one an Estate 1.8 tsi L&K and it's a great. Engine very flexible, lots of torque and revs well. We had before a Golf Mk V with the 140 tdi, and I much prefer this engine. Not as economical, but we get on longer runs between 38 - 40mpg which is pretty good for a petrol. I have an Alfa diesel which does 40 -43 mpg driven in the same manner. Performance is only a little slower than a VRS, which is GTI performance.

Handling is fine, but it's not a racing car, and comfort is good.

The Lauren Klement is great value.

A friend has a 2002 or so 1.8T 4X4. It's a very good car, rapid and well-handling. Its trick 4wd works so well it might tempt an owner into excess.

It isn't super-economical - about 35 mpg on the road - but the 2wd version would be better.

I bought the 1.8 TSI scout in June.
It was supposed to be the 'new' octavia 4*4, but the dealer messed up the order.

I've had subarus' for the past 20 years and my wife has a Forester, so I can only compare with those.

I bought it main to tow our caravan, so only done 2,500 miles so far.
Engine so flexible, it will overtake a lorry in 4th gear easily at 50mph. Normal running in 4/5th gear with caravan we are getting about 23/24 mpg which is about the same as the Forester. Without caravan and just round town, journeys of less than a couple of miles, I'm getting 27/28 mpg compared with my old legacy of 23/24 mpg.
As the miles are being added it's getting better, so early days.
I have a customer who has the Audi version and he gets about 40/44 mpg - same engine etc., but run in.

The car has the usual things of new VAG vehicles except auto fold mirrors. Auto lights/wipers work well. Not as high of the ground as the Land Rover things.

I've found the safety features work well.
Some woman came down a slip road on the A12 a few weeks ago and just cut straight across our front while we were doing 60mph in the nearside lane with our invisible caravan and I had to swerve into the next lane to avoid the 'lady'. The van anti-snake device damped the caravan sway and the car brakes automatically slowed the car with a shaken, but safe result.
Yes, it's always the caravans fault that accidents happen.

It also has cruise control that works well (without caravan), which can't be bad for a manual box.

Corrected mph to mpg for fuel consumption figures quoted, Rob

Best to have a look on the Briskoda forums, you'll get lots of feedback from other owners and mods/tweaks that can be done.
