The draft of the recession must be blowing through Wolfsburg & your local VW Crystal Palace!
Free fitting of bulbs, wipers etc - Halfords charge say £5.00 for this
Offering to match local quotes assuming use of genuine VW Parts - now that is an offer that shows issues in their current practice.
My local Indie charges me £35 / hour - VW rates are normally around 2+x that rate.

The trouble is (being cynical here) they'll just create work to increase the value for the dealership.
Dealers have a completely opposing view from customers' - the dealer wants to extract the maximum amount of money possible out of every customer and the the customer wants to get through their visit as unscathed as possible.
The thing that some manufacturers do (Mercedes for years, and now Honda, that I know of) that adds real benefit, is to extend the manufacturers breakdown cover with every service. In our Honda's case, that on it's own easily makes up for the extra cost of going to the dealer.
