According to the BBC the Government is planning to sell off the Dartford River crossing along with some other assets.
So any hopes that the Government might make the crossing free of charge - as originally promised - will probably be dashed.

And the price of crossings in future may therefore now go up. Why else would anyone buy it.
I wonder if the tunnels and bridge are sold separately :-) i.e. sell two halves of a crossing.

Being in power has taken its toll of Gordon Brown..:-)

It has. And don't let us mock him or anyone. The problems with the sight in his remaining good eye is not to be mocked! He already has lost site in one eye since a teenager. I won't need to cite disability to some on here....
|
When I read the headline "tears in his eye" I thought they were "tears of remorse" for getting us where we are not tears in the back of the eye.
I am not being funny as I have 1 x working eye (and a follower) so I am well aware of the damage done to me with the handicap - my world is very much right biased and normal things such as even catching a ball requires adaptation.
Cover one eye and get someone to throw you your car keys and catch them!

Agreed 100%, for the same reason I feel that I am patronising him by feeling sorry for him in his current predicament.
However that does not get away from the fact that he has done a poor job and the sooner he is ousted the better.

Hang on a minute this is getting political ,i remember the tories being in charge with 14 percent interest. What did they say no socieity only individuals. Our health service has inproved tremendously.I know without their consultants doctors and nurses the treatment i am receiving i would not survive.

20 + years ago we could broadly choose between capitalism and socialism. Today politics has merged in the middle, it is macro politics, all broadly agree on the control system, the problem is who is at the controls.
>>What did they say no socieity only individuals. >>
Not no society, rather individual responsibility not being over ridden by collective responsibility.
>>Our health service has inproved tremendously.>>
No doubt - though to be twice as good it is ten times more expensive and therefore much more inefficient.
To get back on motoring, it may be that selling the Dartford Crossing is a good idea though under the circumstances it is kind of like selling the family silver to repair the roof.

of course the Skye road bridge just went the other way, the Scottish governement bought it from a private company and stopped charging tolls
as ever the English are paying for freebees in Scotland
and the English will be hit ever harder
by the unrepresentative Scots in charge

Very true, dont they get free prescriptions as well? All paid for by the English. However, as much as I dont like the unfairness of it all, I do very much admire the Scottish government and think they are doing some good stuff for the people.

Opps, missed a bit off the last post, add this to the end-
... of Scotland

Doesn't necessarily follow that prices will rise- depends on how much the buyer pays for it. The government is simply turning income into capital
|
Thats fine. They can sell it to a private company. We can then complain to europe that its a monopoly, and therefore illegal under EU rules, and get them to build another one.

Come now, how about that fine alternative, the Woolwich Ferry :-)
|
The M25 does not go via that fine maritime history that is the Woolwich Ferry.
|
The M25 does not go over the Dartford Crossing either ;-)
I thought the crossing was the A282 and can be used by non-motorway traffic. If it was a motorway then learner drivers would have a long detour.
|
Ok to be pedantic then
The M25 does not terminate at a junction(s) next the woolwich ferry
Nor does Euroroute E15 pass over the woolwich ferry, ;P

I wonder when we will all wake up and demand that our government looks after UK pls first and always. This has been paid for already by the taxpayer and now we are all going to keep paying for something we already own!!
The sooner we have a revolution the better.
We need some new MP's and I dont mean conservative but people committed to this country and not their own pockets. Saying that it is too late-- we are now governed from Brussels and Parliament is now just a talking shop with little real power- except to make our life more difficult.
We dont see the French or Germans selling off their assets.
we could just sell of parliament buildings instead , we really dont need these losers anymore.
|
|
We are currently experiencing the highest prices for energy ever. We are currently experiencing the highest prices ever for water. Why. Because the Tories sold all of the utilities. To add further insult to us all , they are now owned by non British company's who charge us what they want. Regarding Dartford crossing its just a way of raising money in this case it again will be the good old gullible motorist who pays. governments know we never rebel.
|
Lets not forget that this will only raise revenue (for the government) in the short term. Long term expect the private companies to make big profits.
Maybe we should start a charity to buy the bridge and run it at cost. I'm sure the banks would be happy to lend the money - the business case is already proven.

this is hardly the time to be selling assets off, is it...at a time many companies are worried about what's around the corner, or even if they'll make the corner.... and finance is retricted.
this'll be another gold selling boo-boo....they'll be sold off at rock bottom prices
he should pay the interest on the debts and wait until the the assets are worth more or various companies have more ability to pay a better price
IMO the Dartford Crossing should not be in the equation in any case..it should be opened up like the Skye Bridge...the damned thing has been paid for by the public already....look at all the traffic jams that would be cured at a cross of a pen

|
It was always meant to be free after the costs were recovered. They went back on that promise. If they now sell it that will never happen.
|
If the Conservatives were doing this it'd be called 'Privatisation', but Labour don't do privatisation - they 'sell off assets' instead. Classic doublespeak/spin.
It should remain in public ownership and be made free of charge.
