Is a G30 type antifreeze suitable for use in a VW engine that specifies G12 ?

I have a vague memory that they've both the same, but with different codes for Europe and the USA. Are they both purple?

This is a VW trick to get you to spend lotsamoney.
On that car why not use a good quality AF that is fine in aluminium engines?, after all, VW do not make their engines of anything that others do not. That what I used n my VW diesel (1.9) and it was fine.
You are not under warranty, after all!
