96 2.0 Clutch - Chev91
Hello! :)

I'm having a small problem with my Peugeot 406 2.0i from 1996

The clutch isn't doing its "magic", and I'm wondering if anyone of you know if the clutch to this car is hydraulic or by wire.

There's this arm attached to a string, or a wire if you like, which makes me think it's a wire clutch.

But here's the thing, the people down at Peugeot says this type of car has a hydraulic clutch.
But, I don't see any container for the fluids.

So, does anyone have a clue?

I think you need to find a different set of Peugeot people because those ones are obviously idiots - it's a cable clutch (they all are on early 406s, apart from the 2.1 td, 2.0 turbo and V6.) What sort of magic is it failing to perform?

Finally, and thank you for your answer! : D

I'm not English, so bare with me, I don't know the words to explain this correctly, so I'll just explain plain simple and hope you understand.

The clutch fails at fully expand the pressure plate.
Which makes it slip when I gass.

It's so bad when I press the gass to the bottom, it just slips, RPM goes up, but no acceleration.

Sounds as though the clutch itself is worn out.

Does anyone know how to "tune" it, or "tighten" it up?
If you understand what I mean.

The whole clutch needs to be replaced. There are 3 parts to be changed, a friction plate, a pressure plate and a release bearing. To replace these parts the gearbox has to be separated from the engine and removed from the car.

Yeah, I know the procedure changing the clutch :)

Except for the drive shaft, do I just seperate it where it's attached to the gear box?
Anything I should be aware of? Oil or anything that may surprise me in an unpleasent fashion?

The drive shafts both have to be pulled out of the gearbox. (drain the gearbox oil first.) The right hand drive shaft (as you sit in the driver's seat) has a centre bearing which needs to be removed. This can be a trial I would also look at the oil seals where the drive shafts go into the gearbox and replace them if they have been leaking.
Can I suggest that you have a look at www.frenchcarforum.co.uk
You will find all the help you need from people who have done the job several times.

Thank you for your answer, very helpful. :)

I'm pretty sure this will also be a pull type clutch, which needs a bit of extra fiddling to get the box out and back in. You need to remove the release lever (which the clutch cable attaches to) before pulling to gearbox off, then when you refit the box, carefully position the release bearing and the the release fork inside the clutch bellhousing, and watch to make sure the release lever rotates as the gearbox slides home.

Nah, it's your basic push clutch, so no fiddling about with special tools or anything.
