Golf GTi tyres - Hugh Bourn
My recently acquired Mk 2 Golf GTi (8 valve) needs a pair of new tyres. Does anyone know if a particular make suits this car well?

Dear Hugh,

Depends what you want. If it's ultimate grip, then a sof compound Japanese make will be best, but at the expense of tyre life as short as 7,000 miles. I have run Pirelli P6s, Vredesteins and Avons on Mk IIs with success. The quieter P6000s can easily last 20,000 miles with a decent compromise of grip and give you an extra mpg or two. But it's always best to run a full set of the same tyre and I reckon it's best to increase the rear pressures over the fronts, for example 32psi in the front and 34psi in the back. That gets the back end working a bit instead of sitteing here like an inert lump of lead.

the new yokohamas which replace the old A520 unidirectionals are not recommended by the specialist that i spoke to. Instead try the toyo tyres unidirectional pattern. these were the ones that tim stiles raciong recommended.
