Presumably anyone who boughts these plates for their other meaning would be more likely to be using them for ironic effect to defuse the power of their meaning, so it's hard to see who is going to be offended here? Not so offensive that the BBC won't report the spelling?
Are they really suggesting that a homophobe is likely to put them on his/her car with the intention of causing offence?

Just the usual PC crap this country has turned into.

They also withdraw registrations starting with SN07 (I mean, really...) and KN08.
The latter I thought a shame, as it would suit certain drivers to a tee. *

This is nothing new, in fact it's a bit of a return to the 'old days' when they didn't issue old-style registrations like BUM, B0G or S0D. The WC combination was not allocated until numbers started to run short in the 60s; the rules were relaxed and Essex got it (no comment). I bet a plate which read GAY was quite sought after then ...

It's interesting that T4 PEE and T4 POO were not considered in poor taste - they can both be seen on vehicles belonging to a loo-hire outfit in Merseyside.

This is the kind of story that stops me being proud of this once fine country and I want to smash my fist into the faces of these idiot beaurocrats that actually had to hold a meeting to decide this action.
What if my name was Dikes or Fagot?
Would DVLA ban me from holding a licence or simply lock me up for having such an obviously offensive name?
I despair

What if I owned the Brains faggot factory?

The gay rights group Stonewall said such action by public authorities helped to make Britain "more equal"...........
Can anyone explain that statement?
|
I assume they mean because err no it dosn't make any sense. I just laughed at them.
I wounder if plates like STR 8IT will be banned?
Actually some of this discussion is probably beyond the scope of this website.

I have gay friends who are just as appalled and disgusted by such political correctness, and the resulting inflammatory supporting statements like this, as the rest of us. There are an increasing number of organisations in this country who, despite being unelected and having no mandate, feel it is their right to speak for others, and their duty to get offended on behalf others. The fact most of the "beneficiaries" they claim to speak for are people who have a sense of humour, and the fact that statements like this actually make their lives harder by implying they need some kind of special treatment, is immaterial.
Same principle as the Clarkson lorry driver comments - ask most lorry drivers and they found it as funny as everyone else. Not the various "representative bodies" who were up in arms on their behalf though.

Whatever happended to the concept of GOOD TASTE ?
Do you really want to see a vehicle being driven around with the plate FUK 1 T?
dvd

My surname is very short, in fact three letters would "spell" it - in 1966 my initials were not released - if they had I could have had two initials and surname on plate - move second initial and it spelt a not very offensive word - in fact it's what footballers do all time on pitch. - now SWMBO initials are out there in Yorkshire I believe.

I have two civilly-partnered friends who might have been amused to stick one of those numbers on their car, but I doubt they'll fret over its withdrawal and nor should we. Last time I looked, we had no legal or moral right to a vanity plate proclaiming our name, profession or inside-leg measurement; if the DVLA chooses to withdraw a couple it thinks might inflame the knuckle-draggers, where's the harm?
Presumably, OBO 110X, which adorns a black Range Rover I saw on the M40 last month, was out there before it occurred to anyone how it might read.

What if my name was Dikes or Fagot?
You'd be all right if it was Balls I should think.
|
Fashion changes what's offensive into merely amusing, and vice versa, over the years.
Can the DVLA recall a plate that is already in use, and would they pay compensation?
And can you change your plate if it innocently becomes ofensive or inappropriate because of fashion or changed meanings?
|
I should think most of us are old enough to remember when gay was not the opposite of straight.
Language evolves all the time, so today's rude word will be low-key quite soon, and a word in normal usage will develop a derogatory meaning.

The opposite to straight is bent.

Ha, I hope they withdraw B4LDY. And it's not as if I made a 'lifestyle' choice to be bald - I had no choice in the matter!

Yes. I've just got in from a journey of about 35 miles and didn't clock a single plate. You just don't notice plates unless they're on a car driven by an obvious nutter, oddly spaced and fiddled with, or attached to something pretty impressive.
So for someone at the DVLA to perceive the imagined offence someone else might take at plates most of us wouldn't even notice is absurd.
Better get rid of the words faggot and dyke while we're at it just to be on the safe side.
|
This appears to me a case of not wishing to offend those who disapprove of faggots and dykes on the basis of irrational hatred or unsubstantiated religious beliefs, rather then faggots and dykes themselves being offended, as it's more likely that the plates in question would be purchased by a faggot or a dyke rather than someone who disapproves of these perfectly natural proclivities.
Therefore a case of PCness being turned to "protect" those who most frequently scream "PC gone mad".
Bizarre.
|
I actually agree with the plates being withdrawn.
Good!
Vanity plates cos thats what 99 percent of them are bought by folk that want to stand out and show others how witty / rich / clever they are.
The conclusion from that then is that its highly likely that the intention of the purchaser is derogatory towards those groups in society.
Private plates - particularly those that "spell" words are just like that. Its snobbery and clevering it. Doesnt impress me.
(who'd actually pay big money for a two pieces of numbered plastic if they didnt want to declare something - I dont believe when anyone says that they "bought it for themselves"
Its not the end of the world that the DVLA have thought, "hang on, this might offend"
I WONT offend some people in those groups (Gay and lesbian) but equally it might offend some.
Why put that on people when its thrust on others in traffic cue.
The point is, no-one knows the plate owners personal view nad for the reasons above I am pretty sure its meant in a derogatoty fashion.
Rant over.

SUE 1M on a lawyer's Merc 15 yrs ago - must still be out there.
The Edinburgh based SN07 looks nothing like SNOT, but the display of KN08 is probably not so pleasant.
For example KN08 END should be on every black 318i that has been de-badged by law!

"the derogatory terms faggot and dykes,"
Being a little old fashioned, faggots are rather tasty meatball things and dykes are earth walls to keep the sea at bay. Remember the story of the little Dutch boy who stuck his finger in the dyke and saved Holland.............. ;-)

did he not stuff the hole in the dyke with faggots then?

(British only) A meatball made from pork.
(pejorative, US, slang) A male homosexual.
(obsolete, US) The cast off end of a smoked cigarette.
Synonyms
(male homosexual): fag, fairy, poof (British), queer

IIRC the registration LE51BAN was one of the first new series personal plates to be auctioned.

Why is it every time a numberplate thread gets posted, people think they have a valid excuse to bypass the forum swear filter.
