I had a test drive in the a new Polo yesterday and while I quite liked it the Salesman said I had to make up my mind "like yesterday". Apparently there's a "16 week build schedule" and my ordered car, if it was one that wasn't already built, would need to be a "factory order" and that would take it beyond the end of the Scrappage Scheme.

He went onto mention that my order, if I put one in, would have to be in a certain colour that they knew was already en-route from the factory or he couldn't take my order. He might, "if he was lucky" be able to swap mine with another dealer somewhere.

Some of this sounded a bit iffy and I know this could be sales talk but has anyone heard similar things?

Thanks

Dougie

I thought the Scrappage scheme was the day you ordered the car and put down a deposit not the day you actually scrap it. Otherwise a lot of people would get cuaght out.

Sounds like a desparate salesman piling on the pressure for you to sign on the dotted line to me. Perhaps he didn't make his quota at the end of last month!

12 weeks plus for a factory order VW isn't out of the ordinary. All the rest is probably guff, but if you like the car and a car of the spec you want is available why wait?

Golly, gosh. 12 weeks is positively 'tomorrow' as far as I am concerned. This year I waited over 5 months for my new Golf MK6.

If you intended to hang on for the forthcoming Polo 1.2 TSi with the DSG 'box which is much hyped by the motoring press as the 'one to go for' forget it...that combination is not coming to the UK according to my local VW dealership and confirmed by VW UK Customer Services.

It's funny this, as my sister would dearly love a slightly used current shaped Polo but practically all the 'used' ones at the VW dealers seem to be the dreadful 1.2 3-cylinder ones and she wants a 1.4 manual. Also I suspect they are mainly ex rental cars which does not bode too well, does it?

Or get a Fabia (same car) with a Tiptonic box with 0% finance and 15% discount.

But the OP is getting a new car, that report was about Warranty Direct's stats on cars over 4 years old. The Polo is pretty much the same car, with Skodas I believe many parts have german writing on and VW logos!

Good point, apologies.

I was looking in the brochures for the 1.2 TSi but couldn't see it - that'll be why. Thanks for letting me know.

I thought the demo I tried was a diesel but it turned out it was a 1.2 3 cylinder model!

Dougie68...

Just to clear up any ambiguity, the 1.2 TSi with the manual 'box will be available within the UK early 2010...it is the version with the DSG auto 'box that apparently will not be available here. VW state that the reason it is not in the new Polo brochure is because it is not readily available here at launch this month!

We looked at the new one recently, and were told 'at least 3 months' for delivery. There were a few around the region for immediate delivery with good offers, but not to the spec we wanted (nothing clever, just aircon and alloys!)

So its off to the Ford garage for a new Fiesta!. 3 months+ is a stupid length of time for a run of the mill motor like this.

Worth checking brokers for prices eg. drivethedeal saves >£2.1k off rrp on a 1.4 Zetec.

I agree for any car, I would change my mind at least six times in three months!

Are they freely available now - when they came out they were extremely hard to get hold of, and apparenly Ford preferred to ship cars eleswhere due to strength of the Euro.

Maybe the ending of scrappage in Germany will flatten demand there so release more cars.
