Hi,

Due to the growing needs in the family, and more of us working we require another car.

Seen a Vx vectra 2001 51 2.2 dti sri, 5 door hatch, in the local rag for £1250. Mileage is 141k. Half leathers, cd, aircon etc.

Just really need opinions on the car. Are these cars good for commuting? Any known issues?
Anybody owned one? What was it like?

Economy...I know its 2.2 but is it good?

Over to you knowledgeable people...Yay or Nay?

Thanks

In this price range condition is more important than make of car. If this Vectra has been well looked after, the high mileage needn't be a problem. But you could also look at the Mondeo, Honda Accord, Toyota Avensis. Volvo S60 and VW Passat (although with the last two you might have to look at something a bit older).

Do you do enough mileage to need a diesel? Diesel engines last a long time, but some components are notoriously expensive to replace if they fail.

The injector seals tend to go on these, maybe they've already been replaced at 141K.

In terms of economy a friend put about 100K on one ( CD estate), it tended to average around 46mpg on mostly motorway commuting.

We have already got a mondeo 1.8 td in the family. Great car. Just fancy something else along with the mondeo.

I know diesels can be more expensive but a vectra petrol 51 plate wont be drastically cheaper than this car.

Is this price £1250 ok?

What are the fuel pumps like?

Are they common rail?

No. First common rail engines on the Vectra were the 1.9CDTi's and they were certainly not around on a 2001 car. And certainly not on a Vectra B.

Another thing...do these cars have dual mass flywheels?

If the car is relatively clean, drives ok and look ok, is it worth a punt?

Any known weak issues on the cars?

IMO the Vectra/Mondeo route has the advantage of a plentiful supply at the scrap yard should you need spares that may otherwise write the car off if you were to have to buy new.

good point re the plentiful supply at the scrappers!

Hopefully I wont have to go down that route!

Does any one if these cars are ok for running on veg oil? How strong are the fuel pumps?

Rear suspension bushes. If worn, then the rear tyres can wear on the inside edges.
