A spokesman for Miss Harman said: "Harriet strongly refutes these allegations.''
Another one for the abuse of language list.
"Refute" means to disprove absolutely, what this spokesman means is 'denies'.
So, I could refute a suggestion I was blind by reading aloud a page from a book, but I would struggle to refute a suggestion I was using a mobile phone three months ago.

A spokesman for Miss Harman said: "Harriet strongly refutes these allegations but she is co-operating fully with the police."
Wouldn't you just like that one in your 'inquiries to do tray' ? :-)
As this is an ongoing investigation; the outcome of which we will anxiously await, I think this thread will soon be locked.
