What are these yellow signs with black symbols for, usually a square, diamond, spot and triangle? All the highway code says is that they are diversion signs, but they are permanent and seem to be on every roundabout.

they are alternate routes if you main route is blocked. IE follow the square diamond or spot.

Okay I'm trying to figure out how they work in practice. Let's say there is a road block beyond the next major junction, presumably there would be warning signs before so you know when to take to take notice of these strange signs. At the junction there is one of these signs pointing left, you to turn left. So you follow the signs, but how can you be sure the signs will bring back beyond the road block, as the road block is recent and the signs are old? Besides when there is a diversion there is always a sign anyway with an arrow and the word diversion so why the need for these other signs?

Where it is necessary to close a section of M way or other main road to traffic in an emergency, special signs may be displayed to advise drivers of the alternative route.
If it is an easy diversion they may just mention the route number to follow
i.e. M1 North closed Alternative route A123.
But where the route to be followed is complex drivers may be advised through special symbols :
Blk Square or outline, Blk triangle or outline , sama sama blk circle or diamond all on a yellow background
M! North closed Alternative route follow blk square.
these are either shown on existing direction signs or displayed on seperate signs along the route until original road picked up.
Not I might hasten to add for use in couple of hour minor blockages but more contracted like roadworks, bridge rebuilding etc.

Ever noticed the blank grey hinged signs at intervals on motorways and trunk roads? Highways Agency or Police will unlock and fold these out in event of a closure to indicate diversionary routes.
Lots of examples around the A4500/A45 round Northampton as it's the primary diversion if the M1 is closed J15-J16 or vv. Circles/triangles also appear on ordinary road signs at each junction.

So thousand of these signs put just in case there may one day be a major road closure? I can see the sense with M ways but A roads?? There are sat navs, traffic report interrupts, maps, are we all helpless? It's another example of extravagant and unnecessary public sector spending.
