I have seen some advertising gimmicks in my time, but this one sure takes some beating!

Unfortunately I don't believe castrol makes exactly the right oils for my car......I wonder what they would recommend.

Easy to find the answer. Follow the link on the last line of HJ's news article. It takes you to exactly the same number-plate based recommendation process that the on-the-road scheme uses.

Hmm. It recommended the wrong oil for my car based on the registration number (it selected the oil for the 2003-2006 version rather than the 2007 euroIV spec).

Have you tried the two methods here:
www.castrol.com/castrol/iframe.do?categoryId=90240...9

If the 2nd method gives the correct oil, then it may be that the number-plate search gives you the wrong info because the car details as stored by DVLA are incorrect. In which case, have you checked the details for your car on the DVLA database?

I tried entering the registration number for the current two cars in the family, and my previous two.

In no particular order, this is what they got wrong:

Engine oil on two of them
Gearbox oil on one of them (including getting the gearbox type itself wrong)
Service interval on two of them

All the details are/were correct with the DVLA.

Only one of the four cars I checked had all the correct details on the Castrol database. Brilliant, and Quentin Willson is banging on about "getting the right oil is essential...", priceless..

Engine (P) Magnatec 10W-40 A3/B3 (b) 4.3

This is what it comes up with for my 1.6 zetec engined escort, but the manual says 5w30. I think I will trust ford on this one since they desiged the engine.

And who the hell gave Castrol the rights to use details of my car for purely commercial reasons? The DVLA, and hence the government. And you trust this bunch of unprincipled liars with your personal data for an ID card?

>>... who the hell gave Castrol the rights to use details of my car for purely commercial reasons? ... >>

Sorry, Altea but I don't get what is wrong here. What personal private details are you worried about? AFAIK, the Data Protection Act is about the processing of personal data on identifiable living people and not about the engines fitted to a car with a particular registration number.

Its the use of data the government think is mandatory for commercial reasons is the matter

It is the same data (i.e vehicle details matched to a plate) that the insurance companies have been using for some years to give you quotes online. This has been available for oil on the castrol website for quite a long time too. There is no personal data involved. If Castrol and Insurance Companies pay to use a database of cars linked to their registration numbers, I have no problem with it. Data Protection kicks in as soon as DVLA give personal details, as per
www.ico.gov.uk/upload/documents/pressreleases/2007...f

p.s. I do agree that much unnecessary information is held by too many organisations and it is not subject to rigorous control.

I must admit that I'm a BIG fan of Castrol oil - always have been really ... I've gone astray a few times though, but I've always returned to said oil eventually:)
I don't like the idea of this new gimmick of theirs though - I take on-board what jbif sez about the insurance Companies having had access to my reg. no. for years - but that is different IMO, This Castrol thingy is blatant mis-use of today's info-tech & should never have been allowed.

I am sorry, but I do not follow your logic at all.
Make/model/engine details linked to number-plate do not impinge on privacy or personal details in any way whatsoever. If it is OK to use them to quote for insurance, it is Ok to use them to tell you what oil is suitable for the engine. In both cases, it saves you the punter from having to input all those details manually, but in both cases the option is there for you do it the long-winded way if that is what you want.

There are far worse pieces legislation you have to worry about - for example if you employ a gardener or plumber or mobile-mechanic [or Altea or Rattle as your computer-repair man], make sure you check their entitlement to work in the UK and take a copy of their passport or you risk being fined £5000.

I just wonder who is going to use that advertising gimmick next - tyre & exhaust outfits, servicing garages, car dealers, Honest John ...
And another thing is the distraction element of the ad - as if there isn't enough distractions on the road already.

Re the last para in jbif post: when you use a plumber to do a specific job, its a contract for services. When you employ a person in the way most would recognise a master/servant relationship (au pair, nanny, Mellor the keeper et al) it is under a contract of service (aka employment). Subtle distinction, so unless you have control, one of the tests of employment, (hours of starting, finishing, national insurance payment, how they carry out the work etc) you can relax. However, employment law is complex, with grey areas. And I'm out of date on most of the new stuff.

Second method is better - its definately looking up the wrong information from DVLA.

DVLA records are definately correct - the new engine has slightly different CO2 output so easy to tell.

Just noticed if you click "Buy Online" it dumps you to the appropriate page on the Halfords website. That can't have been cheap for Halfords to organise.

Well they got my oil wrong....what was recommended would most likely damage my DPF in addition to not being correct for my engine.

I have just checked out my car ~ Almera 1.8i (N16E - QG18DE) on the Castrol site and it suggests 2 engine oils - Edge 0W 30 and Magnatec 10W 40
So, there's a dilemma for me next month when I come to DIY it ... I've had the car serviced by the pain dealer whilst it was under warantee, and they use the 5W 30 I think (I'll have to check) but ... knowing what I knows about the ole timing chain, I may well go the way of 10W-40 Magnatec.

In fact, I've just had another butchers at Castrol's site and there is an element of confusion regarding the oil for my car, so this 'always been a Castrol man' is gonna use oil form the pain dealer - to err on the side of caution!
