I have a 205 Gti 1.6 (1991).
It has develped what I can only call as a howling sound from the engine. The problem does not happen at present when the car is idling only when it is on the move, and increases in frequency as speed/revs increase. The noise starts about 1 minute after you sett off, and will occasionally disappear, although it does seem fairly persistent now. My local Pug garage are at a loss, though they did say it may be the alternator bearing so it has been taken off, cleaned and oiled it and it lasted about 20 mile and then started again. I would really appreciate if anyone out there who loves their PUG could reply with some possibilities. As my mechanic is about 75% sure it is the alternator bearing, it is an expensive part to find out it may not be.
Many thanks

It could also be the water pump.
Alternator bearings don't often go, but if it's in a very exposed position they can and if belt tension is too great, but usually only at really high mileages. It's unfortunate that you can't buy the parts to fix it. Best to see if you can borrow one or get one from a breakers yard
But like I say, it could well be the water pump as presumably you have already discounted a squeaky belt.

Not sure of your lump there but it could be a timing belt tensioner. Daft one but if it comes and goes how's your fan?
