Not a Lada in sight !

Compared to June 2009, [ when I was in St. Petersburg for a week ] the traffic seems fairly light. The Ladas, though have been thoroughly updated externally, and are as unrecognisable from a distance as any modern bland vehicle, so they were probably there. Four lanes each way up Nevsky Prospect [ the main street ] running full but not jammed is something to see. I didn't drive, but used the battle-tank-style Soviet trolley buses. Much safer.

Not a Lada in sight !
That's because most Russians would rather walk than buy a Lada.
The video reminded me of an experience of a mate of mine who lives in Moscow. He was walking across a main road at a pedestrian crossing with the pedestrian lights on green. A black SUV (he reckons it was a Mercedes) jumped the red light and drove into him, knocking him onto the bonnet. The occupants jumped out, one put a gun to my mate's head and the others pushed him off the bonnet into the road before driving off. None of the bystanders batted an eyelid.
He's English by the way, but has lived long enough in Russia to understand that that is the way of things.
