Swings and roundabout I guess. I guess it would be seen as another stealth tax becasue it certainly won't be free.

This could apply to buying/selling anything secondhand. The only difference with cars is their value and possibly they have an identity.

Why not do as the Yanks do (AFAIK) and stamp the VIN on every panel.

might work, might not.

if a crim has to spend a few hundred quid more to get fake doc's (passport, driving licence) it would put the one timers off. doubt it would put the large organised gangs off though.

if the system isn't massively advertised how would the buyer know they are going to bona fidi document checker?

seller says: ' i know the number of the mobile document unit, i'll give them a ring'

customer: ' oh thankyou, how kind'

It really is buyer beware.

In the story there's the example of the bloke who bought a Toyota Landcruiser for a "bargain" price of £14k after seeing it advertised online.

If something looks a bit too good to be true, it often is. I can't think of any other area of commerce where people hand over large sums of money so readily.

If you buy from a dealer you may pay more but you won't lose all your money.

As with anything, criminals will be one step ahead and work out a way around it. If they've got this system in France, then we need to see what their rates of car theft/cloning/scamming etc are, and see if it makes much of a difference compared to our current rates. If not, then forget it.

Dunno. However, "No one is sure how widespread the problem is" - from the report.

It's all over my head. I don't particuarly care if people who spend a lot of money on a car get them stolen, nor if someone else wastes a lot buying them.
Don't leave expensive toys lying around in the streets.
I'd rather the police spent their time making life safe for decent people who are forced to live surrounded by yobs.
