what is the area off the M4 east of bristol - alfatrike
went past it again today. the two large areas of tarmac each side between the junction for the M32 and the junction for the A46. about 10-20 miles east of bristol i guess. they look like sliproads for service areas. it's only 5 miles from another serv's so i don't think it would have had good business if it was ever developed.

any ideas what it was/is?

i think this link of map should work,

Amazing and fascinating that such a website could exist (and I've just read quite alot of it).

What did anoraks like that do before the internet was invented?

I passed that place on Monday. Both stubs had cars/people stopped on them picnicing/puking/going to the bog.

Another M4 curiosity (assuming it's still there) is the half mile or so of grassed over ex-motorway embankment west of Maidenhead that became redundant when the M4 was extended westwards.

There are lots of interesting backwaters and might-have-beens on the motorway system.

I recently discovered an unsigned exit on the M1 which led onto a farm track and then back onto a public road. Coming back the other way there was no warning sign that one was about to join a motorway at an unmarked junction.

Cliff, I think that is one of the secret motorway junctions for MI5 /6 and police.

According to secret bases web site, shown here half way down the page (www.secret-bases.co.uk/secret4.htm ). {edited to add a space at the end of the link so that it will work}

There's an unused spur off the eastbound track of the high level Mancunian Way, Manchester.
Never connected to anything in 40 plus years, it sticks out about 20 ft above ground.
Before it was protected by Armco, a guy drove off the end. I forget his name but some people refer to it a ' Bloggs' Leap ' or whatever he was called.
I used to go up and have a cup of the most awful tea whilst on that beat...checking the night watchman.
Enter Cloak Street on Google maps and convert to satellite...it's just to the south and stands out very well on the picture.

Anyone know what this site is? Slip road goes off M4 eastbound between 14 and 13 - from the motorway it just disappears off into a field and over the horizon. Switch to map view and area is blank.

The entry road off Hangman's Stone Lane is called... Ammo Alley.
It's bit of a give-away...
