Why dont people accept these days that mechanical components wear out just like they always have
Its seems that many people think that a code read can replace worn metal bits

What evidence is there that people don't accept that? After all, bits are replaced at services, repairs etc. as they always have been - I hadn't noticed a great groundswell of public opinion or widespread comment about this, either here or more generally.
False conundrum posed.

... yes, bb's got a job lot of slightly dodgy Fiesta 1.2 short engines that he's trying to unload on unsuspecting punters with sooty lambda sensors, and they are proving resistant in these harsh economic times...

This reminds me of a car a few years ago, that came into the prestige dealer I was working at, at the time.
It came in running on five (six cylinder)
the 'technician' spent all day running diagnostics on it, swapped coil packs over, new plugs, you name it, he tried it, nothing improved the running.
late in the day, an old school mechanic asked if the 'tech' had done a compression test....
'No' was the answer
out came the compression tester - ZERO compression on the one cylinder....
after lifting the head, a nice hole was found in the piston!

I haven't heard that metallic scraping noise from my front discs recently, so I guess the pads must be OK!!! :))
