Different coloured tailgate: effect on value - Will Marshall
1.3gx auto 5dr '99

I will be selling this at some point after I obtain a larger vehicle.

However it has a different colour tailgate to the original (sourced from a breakers yard) but nonetheless looks rather spiffy as it is metallic blue on a metallic silver car.

I have had compliments on it from people of all ages not just boy racers ;)

Realising that selling and buying is a leverage operation, I'm not so optimisitc about the impact on value, I was wondering how much this will this effect the resale or trade in value as a percentage?

It wasn't in a shunt and the the body and fitting points are completely unwarped and undamaged

I can respray it silver if push comes to shove, but time is in short supply at the moment

On older cars like that it might even half the value because people will just automaticaly assume its been rear ended and look else where.

Yes I can see that a shunt would be the natural assumption.

How to get around this? because what actually happened would be too far fetched for the hard nosed car buyer,

Once the glass has pinged the metal sides of the micra tailgate begin to fold back like paper, even at a total distance of two inches travelled at snails pace in reverse into an overhead obstruction with the tailgate up - this is what prevented any damage to the body or fitting points. :)

Stick it on ebay explain everything write a long detailed essay on it. Mention all the bad points and you will be surprised. I wrote one for a friend who had an 8 year old Ford Ka which was so badly rotten nearly every part of the body that was MOTable needed welding. She got almost £700 for it. It had no MOT, the front suspension had collasped due to an accident, it had dents on the wings.

Thanks for the tip, it happened on a campsite up a sandy hill under mediterranean pine trees attempting to park deeper into the shade on a scorching day

So it would make quite agood story I even have a photo of the tree in question

Well that aside, it is an excellent car for it's age esp as the mileage is very low without much town driving and a full dealer service history, in hindsight maybe the £300 nissan wanted for a new one wasn't so pricey after all. But I planned on keeping it much longer at that time so £50 v £300 wasn't much of a decison to make.

If it weren't automatic I could probably easily sell it via a micra boy racer forum, but they love their manuals.

Small, reliable automatic?

Hens' teeth, and will fetch far in excess of what it's really worth.

Could always get the bumper resprayed -- not too expensive, and might make the car even easier to sell.

I wouldn't worry about it. As long as it isn't a rotbox people realise that these little cars run pretty much indefinitely.

Why not buy another Correct Colour tailgate from the scrappy?

Neighbour's Suzuki got a rear door/hatch for £50 @ scrappy to replace vandalised rear screen.

Colour match is OK as T-cut solved the age difference in the paint.

I would think that it would cost more to have it resprayed properly in the right colour silver than the difference that it would make to the selling price.

What twaddle - if that's what it will fetch, that's what it's worth. Or don't the words mean what they used to?

a 99 5 door auto micra assuming its got power steering is easily worth £999
pay a local bodyshop £100 to have the outside of the tailgate painted
why give punters reasons to moan?
its like leaving old toenails and maccy wrappers in the footwell
clean mint car=perceived well maintained

simples (x - PU)

u sure you cannot get another door the correct colour from ebay cheaply? probably worth a look and cheaper if you can than paying for spraying?

a friend of mine had multiple door skins kicked in, insurance paid out as a right off, he bought the car from the insurance company and promptly bought the correct colour doors from ebay for buttons, he paid a bloke to fit the doors, sold the car, and hey he was in pocket to quite a significant amount, went out and bought another car

in london small autos are worth much more than elsewhere, so worth bearing that in mind

you either need to advertise it on ebay or autotrader and sell to someone who doesnt care about the colour, you will be surprised to find there are many of these, or get the door colour changed

I can only say then retgwte that standards are obviously lower in london than they are in the north, however i dont agree in what you are saying because i often get calls from the effluent south and the customers are always very picky on the phone even though my car will be a lot cheaper than they can find in the romford echo, they still want mint one owner full service history and a carrot on the roof for good luck

Why did you change the tailgate if it wasn't damaged?

What happened to the old one?

Tailgate fell in love with a tree and tried to mate with it - he explains it in a posting about quarter way down the thread.

Well...............this is fun, quite a few optons :)

There were two pigeon chicks in that tree flexing their wings in preparation for flying the nest, we'd been observing their growth for a few days

They didn't seem at all bothered, nor did the tree, not so much as a mark on the bark.

I have photos of them also.

(I'm not making this up)

I bought a Citroen ZX diesel estate off Ebay a couple of years back. It was dark metallic green and had a dark red tailgate/ no damage to car so don't know reason. I thought it looked quite nice. Buy it now price £180 with a bit of ticket. Was for my SIL who'd just scrapped one. It gave 1st class service for over a year until the head gasket killed it.
A good case of Bangernomics !
