Hi All,

As per the link below when travelling north up Bond Street to the Newfoundland Street junction, can you go go west bound up Bond Street? My SatNav says no and consequently calculates a route further west or alternatively wants to take me east up Newfoundland street to turn round at the r/b at the end.

Just trying to get it right before i make the journey.

Thanks for any help.

If you are on Bond Street (coming from either direction) you can carry on to Bond Street without the need to go up Newfoundland Street. Coming from the Debenhams roundabout (St James Barton) roundabout you actually do have to go a small way up Newfoundland Street (about 100 yards) before doing a sharp turn right back towards Bond Street again.

Not one of the best road designs I've ever seen - just glad I don't work in Bristol anymore and have to drive through it every day.

Ok, thanks.

Interestingly for the 'coming from Debenhams' that you mention the SatNav shows that a right turn is possible, not the 100 yard detour you mention. Looking on Multimap (Aerial view) I can see what you mean though.

I think my maps need an update. Anyone know whether the latest TomTom map shows the 'as is' situation here?

Regards.

I once had a near panic attack in Bristol.
My wife, who knows the place well, directed me to pull in outside a large store in the centre while she popped inside. There were double yellow lines, and she said, if a warden approaches, "just drive round the block".

Well, a warden duelly arrived, so I pulled away. Never having driven in Bristol before in my life, I was quickly lost and found my way heading out on a dual carriageway to Weston. After turning at the first roundabout I headed back into town, not having the faintest idea where I was going or what the shop was called. After aimlessly driving around for ages I suddenly recognised the shop, and pulled up just seconds before my wife emerged.
"Oh good, no problems then?"

Hideous place to navigate round; Bristol is one of the few places I'm actually grateful for motorways so I can avoid it as much as possible.

Trouble is the father-in-law is in the BRI and we are going to be visiting for the next few weeks.

If it's any consolation, I understand that's a good hospital.

SWMBO, who comes from Bristol, says you can tell it's a seafaring city by the way the drivers tack from lane to lane!

lol - either that or they are all using satnav and trying to take turnings that don't exist!

I've often thought they should have made a road tunnel to exactly follow the old route of Bond st.

It would have necessitated a tunnel of probably 300 metres at the most, and joined the existing dual carriageway near Old Market roundabout. It would not have needed boring as such, as the existing shops were razed to the ground and it could have been constructed opencast style. The new complex could have then been constructed on top.

With a spend of over £500m. I'm sure it could have been crowbared in.

The present route from the Haymarket roundabout is farcical; a set of lights to permit M32 outbound traffic coming from Old Market, and then the ridiculous U- turn set of lights as you then battle with inbound M32 traffic onto the newly named Newfoundland Way.
The acid test is surely yet to come in the run up to Xmas as the massive new multistorey is sited very close to this second set of lights.

I predict gridlock.
