One of the cars that is on my shortlist as an eventual replacement for my faithful Pug is a Mazda 2.0d (or preferably the 2.2d) Mazda 6 (it's a short list containg a Skoda VRS or the Mazda)

However, as I've perused various forums I've picked up on comments that Mazda's are very expensive to service. Does anybody drive and maintain one. I've spent £132 in the last two years servicing the Peugeot. I don't fancy a hefty increase.

I know for my Mazda the 75000 service (I think) is very expensive. You will certainly spend more than £132 on a Mazda - the oil is also expensive. I'd phone a dealer to check - the expensive one was a surprise to me.

You also need to be sure your driving routine suits a DPF equipped car. Too many short/stop-start journeys that do not allow the engine to warm up can cause problems with rising oil levels.

I assume you're after the Mazda6 mark 2. The DPF is better in these with the newer 2.2d engines.

If you want to know service costs ask the Service Department at the dealer.

I always do before I buy a car. Part of the buying routine.

But that's far to sensible and not half as much fun as doing it on t'internet!

There's pro's and cons. DtD are offering the VRS with the options I want for £16300. The Skoda forums are showing no dealer getting anywhere near matching that. One sticking point (and it might seem silly) is that you can't have a multi function steering wheel unless you have a DSG gearbox (which I don't want). A really odd decision by Skoda. The Mazda is also much better equipped.

I've asked the question on another forum and got these from a Mazda technician:

12,500 mile - £300
25,000 mile - £260
37,500 mile - £255
50,000 mile - £300
62,500 mile - £220

I nearly fell on the floor. £300 for a first service. It'd be cheaper to buy a Porsche!!!! Problem is I've only got the two year service for the Pug to compare.....and that was £132. I guess everything will seem expensive after that.

It will all come down to budget in the end. I'm probably going to avoid buying new next. I've enjoyed the feeling of having my current car from new, but a 6-12 month old example of my next purchase will save a few quid (hopefully)

SKODA ! You an buy MFD wheels on-line !

If Skoda enthusiasts are anything like Audi ones buying and fitting a multi function steering wheel won't be a problem.

I don't mess with what comes out of the factory. It's stood me well over the years. I leave them exactly as the designers made them (no added 'bits' or engine chips).

But I'm getting the message :)

What that a SKODA is the right car ?

Yep!!

(But with my record..I'll probably end up with something completely different)

£300 for a first service?!?! I can't believe it! How can the first service (oil, filter change and "checks") be more expensive than the second one?

Those prices (from the Mazda technican) look roughly correct. I have a Mazda 6 Petrol though and that is roughly what has been paid. It's about £300/time, EXCEPT the 75K service which is a big fat one on the diesel (but not on the petrol) as the timing belt needs changing. ISTR that being around £700 ?

But isn't that the cost of a servicing a new car at a main dealer ?

My Primera(s) prior to the Mazda cost about £110/year to service, but that was at the local village garage, rather than the main dealer.

hope that helps ??

I rang my local Mazda dealer today for the 87000 mile service and was quoted £375, nearly dropped the phone. A crazy price if you ask me, anyone now why this one is so expensive?

Also can you tell me if any of you know, is the fuel filter classed as part of the service price? Just that I changed the fuel filter in my 2003 Mazda 6 diesel a few months back and found a Denso fuel filter still in it, looks like it had never been changed!

Cheers,
N-I

I know that this is somewhat off-topic, but I've just paid £209 for my 87,500 Mazda6 (petrol) service, MOT and Mazda funded MOT insurance for the coming year.

I think that's quite reasonable.

I had a Mazda 6 (petrol) from new for 5 years(2004-2009).The 1st service was £110.The others were between £140 and £240 (75,000 mile service).Reasonable considering my BMW 320i servicing was over £300 every time, and that was twenty years ago.

Hi guys and thanks for your replies, ref. bigtee - I would take the car to my independant as I have done since I bought the car, only I have been informed I need to get the valve clearances checked / calibrated as well, this I havent had done and dont think my independant garage could do, hence ringing Mazda. I have a good mechanic who has always done my work without any bother, he does use genuine Mazda filters and all that.

Looking at some of the price s afew of you have paid, they are still a long way off £375... for some strange unknown reason! I could live with £200 or there abouts, but this is nearly double that.

N-I

"Not fit for purpose!"

If you buy a 2.0ltrd make sure you have a good solicitor for when the engine fails, Blows up! or the car takes off at full throttle.

Will phone about Clk Sec and see how I get on, if I get this service out of the road, then it'll be back to my usual mechanic. The car will be over 100K by that stage!

In regards to the above post, most of my driving is motorway miles too and from work, so the engine does get a good run each day. Dont worry I've read all about the rising oil levels, scarey stuff! Are there any tell tale signs when this happens? Just curious to know.

My own car had the stalling thingy which I thought was the diesel pump giving in, but we changed the diesel filter which was found to be an original Denso and in a bad way inside, car hasnt stalled since. I still wonder had the filter ever been changed since new, just due to it being Denso.

Cheers,
