Although I have seen a few of these on the road, I haven't really seen one close up until today when one was parked outside the work.

A couple of design features that I don't like are the rear boot hinges and the front bonnet shape.

The boot hinges are very pronounced on the external surface so much so that they have designed 2 bumps around them. This almost looks like an afterthought.

For years now I have been seeing boy racers that somehow want to customise the front of their Saxos and Corsas by extending the bonnet slightly over the headlights. It looks silly on those cars and I don't think it looks any better on a brand new Scirocco.

Looks nice and I want one!!

The bumps at the rear are to increase headroom. Look ok to me. I guess you pays your money and takes your choice.

I saw my first one recently and could not believe how ugly it was.

I'll be looking out for the rear hinge thing now. But I like them a lot.

Too small for me - not 80% of the time but will be the rest. So probably have to rule it out. Also like the Audi A5 - and the new Sportback looks nice.

I've just placed an order for a pearl black TDI 170PS with various bells and whistles - before the new price rise. Tried the 2.0 TSI but didn't have the low-end grunt I have become used to in diesels and besides the economy is poor. Delivery before Xmas I hope. Just the right size for me. Looked at the Volvo C30 - very humdrum looks and a pastiche; BMW 1 series (non coupe) looks like a breadvan: what's with the droopy side panel look? (Take a decent looking 3 series shape and squeeze at both ends, so that it sags in the middle?) Wanted a car which combines decent performance/economy/ride with stunning looks. The Scirocco with toys is cheaper than a similar specced 3 door Golf believe it or not.
As for looks - it's a stunner in the flesh: only reservation is the high entry boot line.
Looking for a sporting car with enough room for two sets of golf clubs/Powakaddies in the back? This is the one (with back seats down - and those are real back seats with plenty of leg-room).
I'm part-exxing a Jag XJ 2.7 TDVI which is a great car but looking dated, and has to have one set of golf stuff on the back seat..

Doesn't work for me but there again I don't think the Alfa Brera is particularly pretty and I really do like a nice looking Coupe.

This (along with the Fiat 500) is the only "affordable" new car I have seen in years that really makes me want one. Saw one being unloaded off a transporter at my local VW dealer before its official launch and thought wow! Subsequent sightings have not changed my mind.
Has to be in black or metallic blue.

Or white.... or the green.

I love the all-round appeal of a coupe hatchback, and the Scirocco fits the bill quite well.
Beauty is in the beholder and all that, but I think that it is gorgeous. It's stunning in black.

TBH, I would like just a tad more space inside - more like the A5 Sportback.
However, the A5 is likely to be $5k dearer.

When I first saw one, I thought it was a Golf, that Top Gear had done a Marina on......

Grand Piano.....

IMHO a VERY ugly car.

We'll have to agree to differ.

As for ugly, well, if you want ugly, then try a 1-series.

The car that fell out of the ugly tree and hit every branch on the way down.

Used to have a 1 series and loved it and will have another at some stage just because of how it drives.

Ref the Scirocco - I think someone else on the forum mentioned the phrase 'squatting toad' when they first came out and I'm always reminded of it whenever I see one.

HJ's review of the Scirocco says:
"Unfortunately, like some people, it does not photograph well. You?ve got to see it in 3D to appreciate its squat, toad-like presence."

Very true - I only fell for it when I saw a black one in the flesh.

I've always thought they look like squashed toads - so we're at one on this, swiss.

>>Or white.... or the green.>>

White doesn't, to me, do the Scirocco any favours.

I test drove one of these in November and it was ace to drive. I really liked its looks too. However, it is small and impractical so I said I'd wait for the Golf GTi which I subsequently bought. Not just because it's more practical but in my eyes (particularly as a 3 door with the 18 inch alloys) it's a far nicer thing. The Scirooco now seems a bit awkward to me and, as has been said before, seems a bit "sat on".
It's still a cracking car, at least in the 2.0 version I drove.

Love the look of the new Scirocco. Would have bought one but went for a Golf instead. Limited funds!

I'm in the ugly camp on this. The proportions, curvy lines & swoops are all wrong - they've tried to emulate that innate Italian gorgeousness & natural line & grace - but got it all wrong.
It simply doesn't work in the round (or whole).

It looks ok from the 3/4 angle - and I think this is where they've gone wrong - they've taken a 'picture' of how it should look form that angle, but haven't managed to incorporate & integrate the overall look. Ity looks lumpy & out-of-proportion in the flesh - a bit like someone's who's not quite-beautiful or a supermodel reflected oddly in a fairground distorting mirror. The Golf OTOH, works from all angles - functional & handsome. Golf for me anyday.

Looks a bit like a cartoon-car where a big foot has appeared out of the sky and flattened it a bit

I think the Scirocco is very colour dependent. In some colours it looks pretty, in others it looks dreadful. I reckon it's how the curves appear in the different shades.

I wouldn't buy one without having a long hard look at one in the metal at the colour I fancied, that's for sure. No way would I order a new one on the basis of a brochure colour guide or seeing the same colour on another car, that's for sure!

Saw one of these in Germany, in white with some fancy wheels and it looked fantastic.

I wasn't sure about the IROC concept car when I first saw it - looked a bit too banana-shaped - but I think the production Scirocco looks great in the flesh. Of course it looks a bit like a squashed Golf - "sports cars" are supposed to be low and wide! Probably best in dark metallic colours though. Liking the new black horizontal bars of the grille on the Scirocco and new Golf too - much better than the awkward patch of chrome around the grille of previous VW models.

Back in the late 70's i owned a metallic greenScirocco....I thought it looked wonderful then. Less so now. However, i still prefer the Corrado to the new Scirocco. Maybe i'm just not a 'curve' person.
Thoughts on the design of the new Scirocco? - commerdriver
Definitely looks better in the metal than in pictures. I will test drive one in October / November along with an A3 bothe with the 170 diesel so that will be the real measure for me.

saw one this morning twice. definately the same car, some weird greeny gold sort of dayglow baby poo. don't like the colour like the car. black would be good.
