98 1.4 timing chain stretch? - Nige 101
I am aware that early versions of the 2001-2006 Almera suffered from chain stretch. Does this issue also affect the 95-00 petrol model?

Not according to the CBC breakdown, they had two timing chains. If it's anything similar to the Micra of the same period and they rattle, then IME it's indicative of poor servicing. It would seem they can continue rattling for many thousands of miles without any apparent ill effects.

The GA-series engines were not prone to timing chain stretch. These are very well proven engines that pretty much run indefinitely. Yes they will rattle if the oil is not regularly changed.

The QG engines, introduced in the Primera and Almera in 2000, were initially prone -- early 1.5s in particular.

That said I do not believe that the problem is particularly common, even on the early engines. My QG18DE has managed 250K without needing to be repaired at any point.

Thanks folks - that confirms my thoughts - would be an expensive job on a 1998 car....
