what sort of age? any preferance on make?
saw an '01 306 the other day for that sort of money.

Pref not BMW - otherwise not too bothered - age less relevant as she will stick a private plate on it

One way to 'start' would be to search Autotrader for convertible cars under £5K within X miles of you. A major consideration will be ragtop or tin-top, but I don't suppose there are many tin-tops around for that money yet?
I would also recommend a 306 as a possible; but no experience of any others.

Would have thought a SAAB (mid-90s?) would be there or thereabouts - I'm sure that
vintage hadn't faded so much in reputation either.

An E 220 or an older Audi might be possible at £5k. E 220 was very well built but heavy with it; the 16 valve 300 or the later 320 would be way nicer to drive but might not be available at your budget.

The Volvo C70 convertible looks like a useful four seater.

Audi was what my mind strayed to when I read the OP

I know you said not BMW if poss, however, I bought a '99 E36 3 series Cabrio with 85k for £3500 3 months ago. Superb in every respect, save for the fact I wish it was a 328i.... ho hum....!

Many thanks for all responses - looking into this the conv. cost so much more than the same saloon - amazing - I think a cossetted Audi 80/A4 is the way forward........
