"ExxonMobil recommends a five year maximum shelf-life for engine oils including Mobil 1."
Well they would of course. It took a zillion years for the stuff to get like it is and it's kaput in five? Don't think so!
Same BS that puts a "best before" date on bottled water that's allegedly been trickling through the Alps for millenia!

try shaking can up before filling sump up this should get all the molecules moving around
or listen to harleyman

Would you rather have some slightly-past-its-best Magnatec in your engine or some cheap knock-off supermarket 20/50?
For an older car that maybe drops a bit of oil I'd say this is ideal. Not sure I'd put it in my six-month-old 5-series though.

how will i know it is 'past it's best'?
it's not like milk, gone off is definately gone off.
does oil go 'bad' or 'spoil'?
I'm with Harleyman. It's been in the ground for millions of years, been cleaned up had a few additives thrown in. It might be iffy round about October 252,009. Possibly the 5th. :-)
Based on no knowledge whatsover you understand!

alfatrike, it was only a turn of phrase. I don't think the oil will be bad at all -- but it may be inadequately refined for newer cars based on the grading, hence the BM reference.

My understanding of oil is that it doesn't lose its lubrication abilities - recycled engine oil is cleaned, new additives provided and it goes on sale in your local motor factors or supermarket outlet at around £3 to £5 for five litres.
Don't know whether it applies to semi-synthetic or synthetic though.
Even the cooking oil which is kept in emergency stores around the country is only re-processed every 10 years.
hmmm, how do you know that? are you on 'THE LIST'?

The stores don't exist anymore (or so we're told). Actually it's margarine I'm thinking of, and I reckon it was 20 years, not 10, for re-processing.

Recycled engine oils are not by necessity cheap and nasty; the well-respected "Silkolene" oils (now under the Fuchs banner) were all recycled products.

Perhaps you should try testing it with a magnet to see if the 'magnetic molecules' are still attracted. ;>)
I understand that advertising was banned in the USA.
No, but it will run out in 10 years time (allegedly).
i went back today, all gone and the most information i could get out of the 'yoofs' working there was it came in a lorry, great that narrows it down a bit.
what i was wondering is how old would it have been if it was NEW? when was magnatec first around?

No but it will run out in 10 years time (allegedly).
It'll never run out. It may get so expensive that few can afford it though.

Could the reason that the UK want to keep, and Argentina are are keen to aquire, the Falkland Islands be that they are on a big shallow plateau, just like the North Sea? It may not be economically viable to extract anything from there yet, but when the oil price has doubled or more?

No, its because the way it was planned to carve up the antarctic was based on the frontage of the nations that faced on to it. With South Georgia and the Malvinas we would get quite a large slice of the cake - and south South American countries would get none.

What will? You've replied to bathtub tom's post, where he writes:
"Perhaps you should try testing it with a magnet to see if the 'magnetic molecules' are still attracted. ;>) I understand that advertising was banned in the USA."
Your reply makes no sense.

The thread question is "Does oil go "off" ?'
My tongue in cheek answer would have been no, it lasts for millions of years, but might run out.
I think most people realised I was putting a different slant on the question. I apologise for my pathetic attempt at humour.

>>Recycled engine oils are not by necessity cheap and nast>>
Where, exactly, did I state that?
In fact I used to buy such oil regularly in the past for cars for which it was perfectly adequate.
Enhanced if anything - I think I`ve poured antifreeze into the council oil collection facility.
Not to mention brake fluid and general sludge that collects at the bottom of 5l containers...
Where exactly did I state that?
Calm down dear.... I never said that you did!
I was merely allaying a commonly-held preconception.
