Are scare tactics more effective?

Just seen this link posted on another forum.

It's rather hard hitting (no pun intended) and also quite graphic.

Use your own discretion before clicking on the link - it's not for the faint hearted.

Do you know why it was made? Is it for schools, or cinemas?

Pity speed and other surveillance cameras cant be used as phone user cameras.

If it stops just one irresponsible numpty from imagining they're more able to multi-task than they are whilst driving & help avoid just one accident, it'll be worth every penny.

I think its South Wales or Gwent schools judging by something I read.

Just watched it - better made than Casualty stunts.

A biker was wiped out by some twonk changing a CD around my neck of the woods recently.

Well it did mention Tredegar on the road sign - and there were south Wales accidents.

Well made and hard hitting message - it needs to be shown for sure. Judging by the length it will not be an advert - I guess it will feature in schools.

A shorter version could have been worth showing after 9pm in the UK. Gets the message across about texting doesn't it.

good video
might make someone think twice but i doubt it

We were shown similar stuff on an RAC/ACU motorcycle training course back in the '60s, except they didn't use simulated accidents!

A couple of bikers were throwing up.

Concentrates the mind wonderfully.

very true and hard hitting. just what we need in England.

Why isn't it shown here ?

Doesn't bode well for Ford cars though !

Whilst temporarily broken down in the Master today at the head of a country lane the main 'A' road ahead of me a John Deere tractor driven by a Numpty 20 something at full speed, TEXTING as he went past. It was as clear as day. 17.27 to be exact. They all do it around here and 'up there' in air conditioned air seated luxury 'they' have not a clue as to what is occurring 5 feet below them. Young Farmers snip - don't try to beat the swear filter

Police totally ineffectual in these situations. Nick you/me for minor indiscretions that's OK. Chuffing Country has had it.

i found stress to be one of the side effects of attempting to drive a master.

Good advert. They need to a do a version with boys doing the same as you'll just get lads assuming it's only girls that crash while texting....

See numpties yapping on their phones all the time round here. Would be much better if the consequence of driving while talking or using a phone was that any member of the public was allowed to stop you and stamp on your phone, then on your fingers until these thickos get it into their heads that you do not drive while using a phone! It's one thing using them at traffic lights or in totally stationary traffic where the danger is minimal, it is quite another to be driving along fiddling with the phone.

So much easier if there was a generic crime of being a moron in a public place. Sadly some towns would be bereft of inhabitants if the punishment were incarceration...

If I video someone using their phone while they're in a moving vehicle and it includes their number plate would that be sufficient evidence for them to be prosecuted? It wouldn't take much effort. A web cam with recording that records movements would probably get several a day!

I spent 3hours in a driving simulator yesterday. Anyone who thinks they can use their brain for an intensive task like texting whilst also driving safely is fooling themselves.

I'll post a seperate thread on my experience next week.

Pretty well done, but won't have any effect until the police begin prosecuting, which they won't in Lancashire. I used to have a police email to which I could send details of offences so that they could write 'naughty, naughty' letters to the offenders, and put them on a Targeted Vehicles database, so they claimed. They have now withdrawn this facility, presumably because there are too many, cost of stamps etc.

Perhaps if using a mobile whilst driving carried the same penalty as drink driving the problem would virtually disappear, especially as it is a much more visible offence and apparantly just as dangerous.

Is it actually as dangerous? If you're driving while drunk, you remain drunk for a few hours, but if you're texting then the problem passes when you put the phone down.

I'm not advocating any leniency on idiots who text while driving, but I'm not sure it makes sense to lump it in the same category as driving with a brewery inside you.
PSA scare tactics. Txting while driving. - Robin Reliant
I think texting while driving is on a par with falling asleep at the wheel. You are likely to put the phone down rather abruptly when you plough head on into some poor sod.

In general I think it is. If you drive whilst drunk, your judgement may be impaired but you tend to be at least trying to concentrate harder because if you KNOW you've had too many you are (or should be) aware of the consequences and are therefore more vigilant, especially regarding passing bobbies!
This IMO is why so many get away with it; to my shame in my younger and more stupid days I was one of them.

Whilst texting, you are not paying any attention whatsoever to your surroundings. As another poster has noted, it's as dangerous as falling asleep at the wheel.

Am I right in thinking that it would be very bad form in this thread to post a link to PJ O'Rourke's magnificent essay 'How to Drive Fast on Drugs While Getting Your Wing-Wang Squeezed and Not Spill Your Drink' ???

PSA scare tactics. Txting while driving. - Badwolf
What? Tell me, William - is your 'tact' setting corrupted? I'm not having a go here, but some of the things you have come out with, whilst mostly being valid points, have not been phrased with an awful lot of tact and diplomacy. Maybe it's just me having a grumpy Monday morning...!

I think that this video is truly excellent and should be shown before all 12A - 18 certificate films in cinemas across the country. It should also be put onto all similar certificated dvds in the same way that the anti dvd* pirating adverts are, in that they cannot be fast-forwarded and ignored.

I don't understand how anyone can possibly see texting while driving as acceptable. I pulled alongside a girl on the motorway who was weaving slightly, and she spent 90% of the time looking down at her phone while beating out messages.

I leaned on the horn while I was next to her which gave her a bit of a shock. :-)

That's the aspect of it which people who do it don't seem to understand. They spend half of their time looking down at their keypad whilst driving. It's the same as driving along and playing at "close my eyes for 5 seconds...open my eyes for 5 seconds...close my eyes for 5 seconds...etc etc"
