hi,
over the last week, changing gear has become very difficult. it requires much more force to move the gear stick into the right gear. also, when standing still, in first gear with clutch pressed down, the revs go down, and it feels as the car is about to stall.
has anyone else ever experienced this? does anyone know what the problem might be?

Sounds as though the clutch is not disengaging properly, does it crunch when you put it in reverse?

no it doesn't crunch when putting in reverse.
however, with the clutch fully depressed in first or second gear, it is moving forward slowly. I could barely get it into first today, so had to move off in second all the time..... please help!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You obviously have little clearance between the clutch plates.
The fact that it has suddenly come on indicates that might be something other than general wear and tear.
It could be that you have a self adjusting clutch pedal and one of the teeth has come off the ratchet - is the pedal as high as it normally is?
Where the cable meets the top of the gearbox- does it look ripped or misplaced?
Then again my mum had an identical problem with a 106 Diesel. It tured out that the clutch had crumbled and the stray parts were jammed between the plates not allowing it to disenguage.
Maybe take it to a garage and ask them thier opinion. Most places wont charge for this service.

Hydraulic clutch master cylinder failing. (I don't think it has a cable clutch)?

Your car will not have a cable - its a fluid system. You can test to see if its the slave cylinder by pumping the clutch pedal up and down a few times to see if the engagement is improved. If it is then the clutch slave cylinder needs replacing. Its a fairly simple job to replace. Just remember that the clutch fluid system shares the same fluid container as the brakes - the pipe for the clutch comes off the side.
Hope this helps
