I have just been told that my tyre cannot be repaired. I reckon the nail is borderline between the red and blue on this graphic.

To me the term 'major repair area' implies that a major repair can be carried out. I certainly don't want to take a chance with safety but this feels like a bit of a racket!
Anyone offer anything? Even it is only to make me better about having to chuck away a part worn £150 tyre!
Cheers.

Tyre sidewalls are very thin. I just got an MOT advisory for a nail in the inner sidewall of a front tyre. I had them replace it then and there. Not worth risking especially as that's the area most at risk from vicious speed obstructions.

Yes, I'm fairly sure that I read once that it is possible to repair damage in this area. As I recall it's specialist work and you will have to try to find someone who has the facilities to carry it out.
I would think a local independent tyre shop might be a good place to start. Don't bother with the likes of Kwik-Fit, they won't want to know and will only be interested in selling you a new tyre.
You might find somewhere in Yellow Pages.

Years back they used to "weld" a very large patch to the inner of the tyre wall and fill the hole in the sidewall this cost £25.00.
Yours is close but maybe repaired it's far too hard to say without seeing it and the damage done & any cord damage to the tyre.
Shop around to a local second hand tyre shop after all this is the same sort of tyres they sell ones sold to them by a fast fit tyre guy who sold you a new one!

Two garages said they couldn't fix it even though I had primed them with the fact they weren't getting a new tyre out of it because it wasn't leaking ;-)
Anyway down here in the rural south west I couldn't find any 'specialists' quick enough, so, dammit, its a new tyre.

Try a small back street independent. I'd be quite happy with a nearly new decent tyre that had been repaired here. The worst that could happen is back to square one.
|
Ended up getting it repaired.
Took it to Bathwick Tyres in Yeovil and they were the only ones who could find the gauge to properly determine whether it was a major or minor repair. It turned out that it was a minor repair. Cost £17.50
They also advised that major repairs (assuming damage was not too bad) could be fixed but tyre had to be sent away. Cost £25, but you would be on the spare for a few days.
Thought this might be helpful to some.

If it wasn't leaking was it actually punctured? If I detected no leak from it then I would have just pulled the object out myself
|
Cost £17.50
That is not minor up north it's £6.00 for a puncture repair but you may have paid for a new valve and ballancing.
|
It did include valve and balancing.
£17.50 seems to be standard round here!
Cheers.

It wasn't leaking at first but I couldn't tell if it was a nail (the head had been bent over a bit) or a small stone embedded in the tyre. I levered it out a bit, realised it was a nail but it then started to leak very slowly, however in order to try and get a more honest response from tyre dealers I said it wasn't leaking.
Two out of the three said if it was a puncture then it couln't be repaired.
Regards.
