I cannot remeber the last time I have seen a C or E class on a 58/09 plate but I have seen plenty of AMGs on new plates. Does anybody buy the cheaper mercs anymore?
|
Yep! Loads of 09 plates in the Greater London area, and SWMBO bought a cheap new Merc under the scrappage scheme in May. The dealership was very busy every time that we visited, with people signing the paperwork to buy new cars.
The new E class coupe is very tasty.

This what I don't get. I live in Manchester seen lots of Veyrons, AMGs, Bentleys etc but I don't seem to see any mid range brand new cars anymore. Maybe Mercs etc are now so bland they are hard to tell apart from the larger Hyundias etc?
|
I saw a lower spec C-Class estate and I actually thought it was quite a handsome car and in black against the chrome trim, it looked like a deirect decendant of the W123.
I have a customer with a 220 CDi saloon and it is a very nice piece of kit, adequate but not at all brash. People sure do still buy them, you just not been looking!
|
I often think feel I don't notice new cars in our area until they've been out for some time, but Mercedes is probably an exception as I own one.
I see a lot of new C Classes which is not so much of a surprise, but I am surprised at how many of the new sahpe E Class I've seen on the road already.
I'm also noticing a lot of recent A Class's too - but I think MB has been really pushing finance deals on those. The one I don't see is B Class - sell well in Europe apparently, but is a rare sight here.

Thats because the only people with money in manchester are drug dealers, pimps and footballers.
|
That is not true at all. Manchester has the biggest financial and creative industries outside of London.
As for Mercs maybe I haven't been looking. Also as I live in a big city most people tend to drive smaller cars but I am sure if I sat in a motorway service car park I will suddenly see all these mercs.
I haven't seen many new Mondeos either but I have seen quite a few Insignias.

Only vicars, lords and philanthropists in your parish then, AE?

Surely that should read 'drug dealers, pimps and their customers, footballers.'

as a Londoner , it seems to me that that's the entire population of the Manchester area anyway ? ( not forgetting hired assassins )

Dear dear this Merc bashing is getting boring. I have one and I know lots of people who have them from new ones to older ones like mine. Without exception they have nothing but praise for them, one mate turning in his unreliable new Jag for one. The servicing is nse in price than many other makes. Long journeys are a doddle and the harder the work the more the car likes it. i have had no major issues with the three I have had and have found a great indie man to keep it in good nick.

Agree totally, barney100.
Two CLKs, currently an ML 4matic, all never missed a beat. ML a much better car than previous X5. Don't get this build quality issues either. ML built in USA, no squeaks or rattles whatsoever.
What Car nonsense no doubt.

Autocar thought very highly of the latest E Class, placing it in front of the Jag XF and the BMW 5 series
Over and above the previous discussion on another thread about matching the cars properly, the XF and 5 Series are both highly accomplished cars, so for a publication like Autocar to place the Merc first it must be pretty good.

I know of at least one E350CDI that has been ordered for September delivery. Maybe people were waiting for the new model.

The new E class saloon was released in June.

"The one I don't see is B Class - sell well in Europe apparently, but is a rare sight here."
Having had one I could tell you why - but the new C and E class seem to have recovered from the previous quality isses and are finding favour. With my B-class it was design faults; reliability was fine.

Isee lots every day on the M40, and A34. Even more in our car park at work.
|
I saw the new E-coupe yesterday and thought it an exceptionally handsome machine. I'd have one in a heartbeat over a 3-series or A5.
The performance & economy figures for the E250 CDI are startling.
201bhp, 53mpg, 0-60 in 7.4 and a mere 139g/KM CO2.
What more could one ask for?

My hobby horse, I'm afraid. *Chorus of groans from readers*
Stick a hatch on the back and you have a more practical machine, without ruining its looks.
That said, in a couple of years, when I don't need the space, and the price of used ones come within reach.....I wouldn't say no to one!
I love Mercs, but have never had one, unfortunately.

It's often said that the demand for hatchbacks is a uniquely British thing, but BMW are about to launch was is effectively a 5 series (although actualy based on 7 Series) hatchback.

I see loads of them too, particularly the A-class, current C-class and the W211 E-class.
My only problem with Mercedes is that you really have to have one with an auto box and I'm just not quite ready for that yet. Speaking to friends who have gone automatic, they all say they would never go back, and that's a big step to take. ;-)

I bought one recently - one of the last nearly new W211 E class. A diesel 220 auto. It's a solid feeling car and very smooth. Economy's not bad considering the size, ~45mpg. Reliability wise it should be good given all the rework and testing that went into the W211 facelift after the original was so bad.
I had a test drive in the W212 but couldn't justify the extra cost plus I was worried about gremlins given it's a new model.
I went for a Merc because of the good ride, space, dealer and my asian wife who likes Benz. In some parts of the world a Benz is still something that people aspire to.
The Mercedes dealer was helpful with test drives unlike all the others. I was put off BMWs because of the hard ride, Audi because of the poor VAG reputation. I used to have a Mazda and seriously looked at a new Mazda 6 but the dealer was unhelpful. I was tempted by the Volvo XC-60. If I had been able to take one out for an extended drive I may well have bought a Volvo.
Overall I'm very happy with my Mercedes and I do notice a lot more on the road now I drive one.

My father-in-law was always telling me to get an auto. I refused, until I got my first Merc. Since then all my cars have been autos and I am of the same frame of mind as your friends, DP.
Of course I would never admit to my father-in-law that he was right, it's just that Merc manuals are not much cop ;-)
