Cars that Bikes Fit In to - Car
Have been reading the thread about cycle carriers with interest www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?t=69659&...f and this has got me thinking as to what cars would carry two adult size bikes in them with out having dismantled the bikes and leave some rooom for luggage.

Thanks

Is this with the back seats folded flat? Most estate cars I would think, I have had two mountain bikes in my Passat and I saw two in a Volvo V40 of a colleague. The bikes do knock against each other and might scratch though, so not ideal for expensive or cherished bikes.

Yes with seats folded down and preferably with the bikes standing up right or in a V shape.

This was with them lying down overlapping each other.

The Ford S-Max is available with cycle rails that fit inside the boot space. I imagine you'd need to remove the front wheels (of the bikes) to fit the available headroom but you then have three bikes securely loaded, warm and dry. Ford markets it as the Activity Kit.

This picture suggests you can do something similar in a C-Max, but I wouldn't want handlebars so close to my head.

I want to remember that there is a gizmo you can fit in an S-Max. I seem to think it is an internal bike rack affair so that a couple of bikes can be placed standing up in the loadspace when some or maybe all of the seats are flat. It is of course perfectly possible I imagined that.

At one time I had a Galaxy and at another an Espace. Both of those would swallow bikes provided you removed some seats.

My Mondeo estate takes them OK if you take the front wheels off but I prefer to use my roof mounted rack. It was a bit fiddly at first but like most things it's fine once you develop the knack of attaching or removing it. Keeps the mud outside the car too.

Humph posted while I was looking it up.

Cleverest built-in bike carrier I've seen (although external rather than internal) is the pull-out drawer in a Corsa's bumper. The number plate slides out with it, and it has its own set of clip-on lamps, so it's entirely self-contained. Sadly, it's a factory-fit option only and, presumably, an expensive one, so I've never actually seen one in use. Great thinking, though.

This site is dangerous. I didn't want an S-Max when I got up this morning. Off to look at one now........Would be ideal for me.

Looks like there are under £200 mind you one does have to purchase a Corsa.

Wonder how long it will be before other manufacturers offer the same option.

Myself and 5 others cyclists took on a too long a journey with children (trying to go from hostel to hostel) Fortunately it was not far from home, so phoned my late father to collect us in my Transit 80.
All 6 bikes and six people carried - before the days of rear seat belts!

Don't know if it would, but I suspect a Berlingo would be big enough as well?!

Any one know the length of an adult mountain bike?

Any others apart from the Berlingo?

About 1.75m if the two in my garage are typical. (Both have 26" wheels; one 18" frame, one 24", so frame height seems not to affect overall length.) You can shorten them a bit for transport by turning the handlebars and front wheel 180 degrees - or, of course, by removing the front wheel altogether.

Thanks WillDeBeest.

Thinking about it height of the bike would be also an important measure to see if it would fit easliy into the car.
