As I was leaving the Shell garage at Dean Row after refuelling, a car shot by with the garage attendant hanging in through the driver's window and making a very valiant effort to prevent the car from leaving. It was a black 08 reg. Golf GTI. As the attendant and the driver struggled the car shot back and forth as the driver tried to shake off the attendant. I was half way across the road by then so I stopped, blocking off most of the carriageway. Other cars had stopped, blocking off road in the other direction. The second attendant ran up and tried to help, but eventually the first attendant went sprawling and the car accelerated like it had wings and swerved around the front of my car and away towards Wilmslow. I could have blocked the car by driving forward, but held back with the thought of SWMBO sitting beside me.
The two attendants were burly and appeared like EU immigrants. I wouldn't like to have tangled with either, but then I am long past my sell-by. The attendant's effort was very brave, but quite dangerous. Obviously he is very conscientious.

Good for him. We need more like that.

Do attendants still have to pay for losses out of thier own pocket?

My local station they do,they must have more cameras up than mission control
I note in the original post a golf on an 08 was mentioned, well on the police programme the other night it was pointed out that fast golfs were prefered tools of low life and the one in the programme had even had its airbag system taken out so if they crashed while being chased they didnt get stuck in their seats while the bags deployed
|
Do airbags stick you in the seat then? Seriously.

They will hit you with sufficient force to stun you. And then the bag is in the way too.
|
Yes, and when they go off it is like a duvet hanging from the roof.

You can also disable the post crash shutdown, so the fuel is not cut off in a heavy crash and you can continue to drive like in an older car.

Why not make all pumps pre-pay (cash or card) and so avoid the problem?
|
|
Not all cards for payment have a chip. I have a fuel card which needs signing for. So this idea won't currently work.
|
|
Chip and pin has not reached the USA, yet they manage pre pay.

You can pay before but how do you know how much to pay for a full tank. I always fill up to full as it's less hassle etc. Again I've got a fuel card that needs a signature - one day they will no doubt make them compatible for this company as some can use pre-pay pumps.

The magic bit is the use of legs, walk, (yes walk!) to cahier, swipe card, who then switches on pump, fill car, walk, (yes again), to cashier who prints reciept, sign. Even at my great age I can manage that. :-)

Oh, I forgot, if you "forget", or cant manage the second visit to the cashier, they will charge your card as a "customer not present" transaction.
