A1 or M1 better at the moment? Hatfield Galleria springs to mind as the main issue, what's it going to be like on Tuesday morning? (and what about the M1 widening?)
A1 would normally be my choice.
Thanks

The M1 widening was finished last time I went through, or have they started again?
|
drove to harrogate and back on tuesday on the M1 and it was fine. There is a quite long stretch set to 50, (cant remember where though!) but traffic moved freely all the way there.
a1 has roadworks round hatfield, but dont know how bad they make things!

I went thru the Hatfield tunnel 2 weeks ago, limited lanes and a speed limit and lots of cameras but no real delays as such. I did Bagshot to Grantham, M3.M25,A1 in 2 hrs 15 on a Thursday early afternoon.
|
Road widening on the A1(M) north of Wetherby, although the M1 has conked out by them so you've not much choice.
The widening is a major scheme, but since it is largely new road being built beside the old, there shouldn't be much more in the way of delays than usual.
|
I used to use A1 all the way, but the last few times, because of roadworks around Hendon, I've nipped onto the north circular at Brent Cross to pick up the M1.
Cross onto the A1 at your convenience, but before M1 J13. The roadworks there are causing some delays.

The Wetherby scheme is now more or less finished. Not sure what remains to be done as the road seems to be completely finished.
A few miles north of wetherby (well, about 20) the A1 is being made up to motorway standard. They have started on the dishforth to Leeming section: there are some average speed cameras on the southbound section near the A61 junction and also at the Leeming Bar junction. Northbound the cameras are just past Leeming. Situation changes on a weekly basis.
The Big Daddy though is at the Angel of the North. Sounthbound lane is closed completely for another 2 weeks or so. Highways Agency advice is to avoid completely. Depending on where you are going maybe the A19 from Dishforth is a good bet or take the road to Sunderland from the A1 (forget the road number but maybe Junction 61) and pick the A19 up from there.

This has been quite a topic around here.
General view from commuters after the first week seems to be delays have been much less than anticipated.
However, that stretch of the Gateshead Western By-pass is the one piece of road in the North East that can suffer what I call North West/South East levels of congestion.
It can be very heavy going at almost any hour of the day or night, roadworks or not.

There is the best part of 20 miles of 50 limit on the M1 around Nottingham, which caused me little delay on a Saturday morning a couple of weeks ago, but might be a bit slow during the week, at busy times.
The M1 around Leeds and onto the A1 does work well though - it will be my choice going to Leyburn in a couple of weeks.

M1/M18/A1(M) is about eight miles shorter and you miss out Sheffield and possible delays past whatever that enormous shopping centre is called.
|
Good call - I'd forgotten that, actually used it last year!
|
Manatee,
If you're going to Leyburn, you will be dangerously near my caravan in leafy North Yorkshire.
Not stopping on a site, by any chance?

Possibly ;-)
Not unadjacent to the CC site at Harmby. Will be getting in some walking and some real ale.
I hope the Elite cinema is still in business.

...Not unadjacent to the CC site at Harmby....
Now there's a thing, my static is a few miles down the road not unadjacent to a site with its own golf course.

I have used the A1 north (as far as newark) once each week during evening rush hour for the last few weeks, its been fine tho I hit it just at the hatfeild tunnel (a414)? by coming off the M25 the junc before south mimms, and whipping up through Colney Heath. The tunnel is slow but moving.

wetherby is all done,it was a pleasure to drive through today with no specs and potholes all over
that new services (north of wetherby) was full of cars and trucks, looks a right gold mine for the sellers there

Thanks all, have passed info on.

In my weekly trips north from Hertfordshire I'm avoiding the A1 at Hatfield like the plague, having been caught once in slow-moving traffic. However, as others have said, maybe it's not that bad all the time.
Instead I've been using the M1 north to Jct 13, which is just after the speed restrictions start for the road works. Usually this works well, with congestion building up only at the last minute.
Then onto the A421 east at Jct 13. This route is also subject to major roadworks, consisting of the construction of a dual carriageway alongside the existing road and I have had no actual hold-ups - BUT there is a 40 mph limit for about 8 miles going east from Jct 13; you can end up doing nearer 30.
After this it's a good fast dual carriageway which joins the A1 at the famous Black Cat roundabout.
