The car is a 2.0 HDI with 102,000 miles on th clock. It has recently started losing power and at the same time the speedo drops to zero shortly after the speedo will go back to normal and the power will cut back in. This has happened numerous times and is not at any specific speed. Has anyone else come across this or does anyone know a fix for this. Thanks

Hi Tiny
Sorry, no answer for you but my car is having similar problems. 2003 model 406 2.0 hdi with 65k up.
Happend last night on motorway at about 60mph. Complete electrical shut down (speedo, radio, fuel guage, everything) then re starts (I imaging it's bump starting back to life) with dash lit up like a christmas tree. Happened 3 times in a row (over about 5 seconds).

Hi Chris
Sounds the same as my issue but mines not a complete electrical shutdown its only the speedo that shuts down and a loss of power. normally only lasts for a few seconds but last time it lasted over 5 minutes.
I've taken it to have diagnostics and nothing could be found, time to consider selling i think.

I had a similar problem with my 406 HDi with a loss of power and erratic speedo - usually when doing roundabouts.
I traced the problem to the wiring loom between the engine and ECU shorting to a support bracket where it had worn through the insulation. This bracket is located on the engine and is the last one that supports the loom before the ECU.
Although the 306 will be different in many ways it could be worth giving it a thorough visual check.

Thanks for the info.
Had a look around and can't see anything obvious.

My 306 1.4lx has the same problem ! About once a month I will lose power on and off for about 30 seconds, the car jumps a long. The trip mileage also resets itself back to 0. Haven't found a fix yet.

Further update.
For a couple of weeks after the original post the car continued to intermittently shut down.
After one of the cut outs, the car re-started with the engine management light on and the display showing 'anti pollution fault'. Would only drive in 'safe mode' (half power).
Fault diagnostics said air flow meter. This was replaced and computer re programmed.
All seems fine so far, although i'm not sure if this was the original problem or a further problem caused by the 'bump starting' at speed?

I would be interested in the answer to this. My sisters car (X Reg 306 HDi 127k) has the same issue (intermittent).
It started off with just the speedo not working from time to time. Switching the car off and back on again normally resolved the issue.

Hello everybody, I have a peugeot 306 petrol 1.4 lx year 2000 and i have been experienced this problem for the last month and i have seen many mechanics about this. Whilst approaching a round about or a junction i would lose power and the car would have to be bump started back into life. This problem i have now solved can be done by replacing the lambda sensors and also cleaning out the throttle body. Straight after this was fixed now my speedo doesnt work and i have been told that this problem can also be fixed by replacing the Transducer/transmitter.
The only down side is that you will have to buy the lambda sensors from a peugeot main dealer as the cheaper version from a garage will not last and you will need to keep replacing them. These 2 lambda sensors that i replaced were a totol cost of £397 without labour so very pricey. The Transducer you can get from a local car recycling company.
I hope this has been a help to you any replys welcome

i would think the speedo sensor is playing a part here too

Different faultshere. Tint appears to have a fractured wire, corroded connector or a faulty speed sensor and the signal goes missingand the ECU does not know what to do so backs the car off.
The other fault is more like a main ECU relay problem or even a cracked fuse. Diagnostic checks on these cars may help but some close inspection would be wise first. Regards Peter

Hi,
I have this exact same problem on my 2001 Peugeot 306 HDi. It has only occured twice though. Did you ever find the solution?
Cheers
Dan
