My vibrating steering wheel starts at about 65-70mph and is worse over 70mph. 4 new tyres with aparantly a wheel balancing at tyre spot (north east firm)
OK after being in the local garage they say that even though the wheels are balanced, they need a fine balancing at somewhere like tyre spot as their machine only go's upto 70mph.
Is this true, i've never heard of a "fine balancing", they say they've looked at the front of the car and found nothing else.
Am i being fobbed off or does this sound correct?
|
ok why can no-one help, is there a fine wheel balancing that balances for speeds over 70mph (not that i do it).
But obviously i'll do 71,72mph so i need help
Apparently it's just the quality of wheel balancing equipment that is in question.
Anyone know of any in the Newcastle area, i know of tyre spot but that's it.
Any comments please.

Patience. Until then drive below the speed of shake.

Are you certain that a wheel(s) aren't buckled?
|
have to be honest i don't know, if the "finer" wheel balance doesn't work then i'll look into that.
Just need to know if the "finer" wheel balance for 70mph and above is possible at a tyre specialist?
|
If you find a suitable yre specialist, see if they do good wheel alignment while you're there. I love my car but so far anything to do with suspension, steering or tyres seems to cause a problem. I think I've nearly got the alignment sorted, but I'm getting some wheel vibration, actually it can be felt thru the seat as well if that makes a difference, and as the car has only done 4,500 miles I'm reluctant to think that it's just the wheels need balancing...

Andy22,
If you can, try to find a tyre retailer who can balance the wheels on the car. This can cure all sorts of wheel balance problems, but not many places have the equipment to do it these days (usually Hoffmann).
Good Luck!

i've just found a place that does electronic wheel balancing, is this better than the older weights on the wheels method which is how the previous garage said that they couln't do it over 70mph?

They'll still use the weights on the wheels method. All that's different is that they probably have a more sophisticated all singing/dancing wheel balancer.

Just to get a better idea, what type of car have you got and what wheels and tyres (specifically, are they aftermarket wheels or manufacturer's own).
The reason I ask is that several years ago, I bought some alloys for my Cavalier. The stud pattern and offset were correct, but there was a gap between the wheel and the hub, meaning that the wheel was located entirely by the wheel bolts. Up to 65 or so, it was fine, them it would begin to shake. Eventually I got rid of them because there was no way to fix the problem, as the wheels didn't take hub rings.

i haven't owned from new so i can only assume they are original wheels.
406 steel wheels, 2 capitols (continentals) on the front, and 2 lassa's (bridgestone) on the back. Not top quality but they weren't cheap.

WELL THAT'S IT, THE WHEELS HAVING BEEN BALANCED MORE TIMES THAN A SET OF SCALES, AND IT'S STILL THERE!
IT MUST BE SOMETHING ELSE, AND ME BEING A PICKY PERSON I NEED TO FIND OUT WHAT COS ITS IRRITATING.
WHAT ARE THE CERTAINTIES THAT IT COULD BE?
|
I think I said before...something might be bent from a minor incident. Not a technical view, just one from experience.
|
|
Yes, but have the wheels been balanced on the car or off the car?

Ouch, no need to SHOUT!!
Buckled wheel(s)
Worn ball joint.
Worn trackrod.
Worn steering rack.
Worn suspension bushes.
Worn shock absorber(s)
Wheel bearing(s)
Buckled brake disc(s)

One to add to the above list
Check the tyre isn't out of round
I know, I know, it sounds daft, but a 306 DT I had in the past had just such an incurable wheel shake and in the end it turned out to be one of the front tyres out of shape. Swapped it for the spare and the wobble went.
|
word from the garage (peugeot) that it must be a wheel or tyre because the shaking or vibrating only comes throught the steering wheel and not any part of the car.
Anyway, its in to day and they are putting 4 new wheels they've got on it which should cut it down.
They did sya it had to be a wheel though and not the suspension, this sounds correct but i'm not so sure.
I have to be honest they have been good with previous problems, even if expensive
|
Well, well, well (three holes in the ground).
problem fixed by 4 new wheels, one was dodgy but they didn't have the time to find which one. they haven't charged me for it yet like so they better not think of charging me for all 4 wheels and just 1.
they told me to try it for a few days, so even though they've got my mobile number, i could just not go back (peugoet dealer)
well i don't know maybe i will.

i had similar, it was the tyre bulging through the tread!
