any idea how many hrs it should take to strip down and replace bearings and diff. bearings in gearbox. VW Polo 1997.....

Around 8 - 10 hrs I would say. When I had my Rover box done the specialist had it for 2 days. Same deal for a friends Golf GTi.
If you're anywhere near Coventry I can point you in the direction of a chap who really knows what he's doing and doesn't charge the earth.

if box is noisey 085 type when i worked a vw main agent there was a recall to check endfloat on bearing nearest lh frontwheel.as the factory had forgotton to shim them right. i worked there about the time your car was built.
this one supports the layshaft and can become very noisey.
prts not expensive also can be done in car. worth checking

What models of Polo would this box be fitted to? Petrol or Diesel of both?

all petrol as long as five speed. 084 type is the old four speeder. 1.9diesel polos have an uprated type of 085 box shares with skoda felicas and caddy van.

I will check it out with the mechanic first...otherwise if it is the bearings, I will get a reconditioned gearbox fitted. It is the same cost as changing the bearings!!
