04 4.2 Rattling from boot area - troutman
Have developed a deep rattle from boot area over a period of several weeks. Any slight bump in the road and I get a knock. Sounds like a loose silencer mount, but have checked, all solid Any ideas?

Loose golf clubs or exhaust heat shield possibly?

Check the shocks. Just had similar symptoms on my XJ.

The rattle began about two weeks ago and was only really noticeable below about 40mph. The filled-in trenches left by utility companies provoked it every time.

I had it checked out at the Jag dealer when it went in for service last week and they diagnosed that the noise was coming from the nearside rear shocker. No reason to change them other than the noise they said, but if I wanted them done it would be £590.

Took it to an independent RR, Bentley, Jag specialist today in Reading. £390 all-in, the noise is gone and the car feels much more 'planted'. I'm surprised at the difference it's made.

If it has CATS it will cost a bit more.

>Tapered bush bottom rear nearside shock. £200 all in..

Result!

If it had needed new shocks you'd have been looking at about £500 for the XK. Around two and a half hrs labour plus £110 per shock. Plus VAT.
