Vauxhall Corsa C (2000 - 2006) - 01 1.0 Problem with dashboard lights

01 1.0 Problem with dashboard lights - annieR
Whenever I turn on my headlights the dashboard lights and clock turn off. This seemed to start when I had trouble turning the key in the ignition (which I have now solved using WD40 and a hammer!) Any ideas if this is just a coincidence and how i can solve the problem - preferably without involving costly electrical diagnostics?

Is it possible that you have inadvertantly knocked the dash dimmer switch,next to main lighting switch?

checked - just in case, but no luck. dimmer also doesn't seem to turn off the clock as is happening when i turn the headlights on
