I had an exhaust blockage in my Escort 1600 that turned out to be the rear silencer box breaking up internally, so that a wodge of glass fibre went into the tailpipe. It moved around though, so the fault was sporadic at first. When removed, the silencer box was swollen, but not burst, from excessive pressure.
I would agree by the way that a strange engine noise at high throttle openings was one of the symptoms. Fuel thirst was another.
