HJ's car-by-car gives 3 stars to the Golf vi and 5 stars to the Focus. Is the Golf really that bad?

Probably because they hold their value too well so don't make that great used buys?

......... in an ordinary Focus.
No Focus is "ordinary"!

With enormous respect and due deference to HJ whose smallest fingernail knows more about cars than my whole sentient being...................to the ordinary punter, the number of stars given by an expert makes little difference to their purchasing decisions (on the whole) If it did, there wouldn't be so many carp cars on the road.
I didn't even test drive a Focus when I considered and purchased my Golf. In fact, I don't even think I considered any other car at all. I know I simply didn't want to own a Ford. I appreciate I may have done myself out of a brilliant driving experience. My best mate has one and I have been in it as a passenger. It is nicely put together, but I still never considered one.
For most of us, we don't feel every nut or bolt. I wouldn't know nicely weighted linear steering feel if it kicked me up the backside. It was just that the instant I sat in the Golf for the first time it felt right, and the drive confirmed it for me.
Funny enough; after being in my car, my mate (who gets employee discount for his Focus) says that he would prefer the Golf if he didn't get the discount.

My first 3 cars were VW products - and that was back in the days when most were still air-cooled and to buy one was to mark oneself out as a little bit unusual... but I long ago abandoned the notion of brand loyalty and I would not buy a car because of anything other than its intrinsic virtues. Therefore, good though a Golf undoubtably is, I would choose the Focus. But it's good that we are all different and can exercise choice.

Because he's expressing his own opinion which is no more or less valid that anyone else's.
Personally I would have a Golf over a Focus - better built and more refined.
Road noise intrusion in Focus is bad.

A Golf is a great car to buy new. A Focus is a great car to buy secondhand.
An Astra is also best bought secondhand, although with Vauxhall's cavalier (sorry) attitude towards early component failures just out of warranty (see the current Astra and Corsa threads) it may be best bought not at all.
